Personalize Learning: Making the Shift to "Our" Classroom

Personalize Learning: Making the Shift to "Our" Classroom | STEM Connections | Scoop.it

One of the most difficult parts of our jobs as educators is to create a learning environment where our learners are engaged and meet content and curriculum goals. From my experience, the single most important challenge that needs to be addressed to earn engagement in our classrooms is to develop a culture of learner autonomy--allowing and encouraging learners to take control of their own learning. There are many barriers that we, as educators, must work to clear in order to create a strong culture that allows our learners to feel comfortable with working toward a common goal in the way that works best for them.

Must investigate further
Helen Teague's curator insight, May 22, 2016 10:26 AM
Kathleen McClaskey's insight: Brian shares how he transformed his classroom to a learner-centered environment and what happened in the process with his learners. Here is a glimpse of his journey: "As teachers, it is difficult to let go of control and to let our learners find the best ways for them to achieve content and curriculum goals. To be clear, our role in the classroom needs to change, and I think the trend in education is moving the correct direction--achieving and creating a learner-driven, personalized atmosphere is the key. Providing learners with the tools to succeed should be the goal, and we should focus on allowing them to use those tools in the way that works best individually. Instead of providing the blueprint for learners to achieve a goal, educators should be allowing and guiding them in designing, developing, and implementing their plan for accomplishing it. When this happens, drastic changes take place regarding engagement in our classrooms and ownership of learning appears, leading to a higher level of achievement."
Dorothy Retha Cook's curator insight, Today, 9:33 AM

Education is an important area of life that effects areas of an individual life that  last life time and only testing which reveals the current education level and not the previous years be they educationally successful or not because the present status of education and all the needed services and programs needed for the students education success on his or her current education level for success cannot be determined by usage of former education info.

Where Librarians, Educators, and Media Mentors Go Online to Learn | Educator Innovator

Where Librarians, Educators, and Media Mentors Go Online to Learn | Educator Innovator | STEM Connections | Scoop.it
When the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) and the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation made funding available for 30 of these Learning Labs, beginning in 2011, the goal was twofold: to create accessible spaces for hands-on, interest-driven youth learning; and to nurture a network of practitioners who could support one another’s professional growth.

Today, along with 29 active Learning Labs, there is a YOUmedia Community of Practice online platform where nearly 300 educators who work in these and similar spaces share resources and advice. YOUmedia labs were some of the earliest locations, but the Community of Practice is open to the broader group.

“Communities of practice are low-cost ways of connecting people who have an interest in a certain professional area,” said Korie Twiggs, manager of professional development at the Association of Science-Technology Centers (ASTC), which manages the platform for YOUmedia. “It helps them build skills and resources and level up their own practices.” With support from the National Writing Project (NWP) and funding from IMLS, the Community of Practice platform includes curriculum development tools, job postings, and discussion threads.

Top 10 Resources Encouraging Girls in STEM | STEM Village

Top 10 Resources Encouraging Girls in STEM | STEM Village | STEM Connections | Scoop.it
Engaging students with STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) education is more important today than ever before. There’s a large gap in today’s job market between the skills demanded by growing fields and the amount of potential workers that possess those skills. All of us at STEM Village aim to empower all youth to take a passion for STEM subjects and to continue building their skills for the future job market. However, we also recognize the growing gap between women and girls who choose to take on a STEM career. Read more about why girls need STEM and why STEM needs girls in this article by Today’s Parents.

Our team aims to find the best STEM resources available so we can bring them to the Technology, Math, Science, and Discovery sections of our STEM Village app. We celebrated International Women’s Day this week and are continuing to celebrate the power of women and girls for Women’s History month, by sharing our favourite Women in STEM education resources on social media. Here’s a list of our top 10 picks to empower girls in STEM!
