The Map Of Native American Tribes You've Never Seen Before

The Map Of Native American Tribes You've Never Seen Before | STEM Connections | Scoop.it
Aaron Carapella couldn't find a map showing the original names and locations of Native American tribes as they existed before contact with Europeans. That's why the Oklahoma man designed his own map.

Photographer and Leopard Seal Come Face-to-Face | IFLScience

Photographer and Leopard Seal Come Face-to-Face | IFLScience | STEM Connections | Scoop.it
Leopard seals are huge predators who mostly live in and around Antarctica. Though they will eat small fish and krill, they are the main predator for penguins. These seals can reach up to 3.5 m (11.7 ft) in length and tip the scales at up to 600 kilograms (1,320 lbs). They have massive sharp front teeth used for shredding meat and can open their mouths twice as far as a Grizzly bear. Yikes.

Global Multidimensional Poverty Index

Global Multidimensional Poverty Index | STEM Connections | Scoop.it

"The global Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) is an international measure of acute poverty covering over 100 developing countries. It complements traditional income-based poverty measures by capturing the severe deprivations that each person faces at the same time with respect to education, health and living standards."

Seth Dixon's curator insight, June 20, 12:36 PM

The MPI was developed out of a desire to fill some of the gaps in the HDI's applicability and utility.  Allow me to quote the editor of one the NCGE's journals, the Geography Teacher, on the usefulness of the MPI website for classroom use: "With the infographics, maps, graphs, country briefings, and case studies, you have a ready-made lesson activities to demonstrate patterns of fertility, mortality, and health for a population unit, and access to health care, education, utilities, and sanitation for an Industrialization and Economic Development Unit. Connections can also be made to malnutrition and water, as well as to key concepts such as pattern and scale, to key geographical skills such as how to use and think about maps and geospatial data, and to the use of online maps and online data."  Also, this article from the World Bank also give a run-down on the key findings of the MPI in 2014.

Bonnie Bracey Sutton's insight:

Who could ever forget the panoply of the civil war with the personalization of it on NPR and also the grisly problem of taking care of the dead. So many deaths a whole change in the way of taking care of bodies. I got in trouble once for having a "faux" reenactment soldier of each side to the classroom just to liven up the unit.

Expanding broadband is critical for minorities

Expanding broadband is critical for minorities | STEM Connections | Scoop.it
Regulating the Internet as a public utility would perhaps affect no group more than minorities.
Bonnie Bracey Sutton's insight:
Sadly those who have access, tools and well trained teachers often forget those who do not. If we are going to be a majority minority nation we leave them out at our peril.... now is the time to be proactive in creating opportunities for all.
