"I brought a superhero into my classroom the other day. He wasn't wearing a cape. He didn't have an alias. But he had the greatest superpower of all: inspiration.

When you teach using project-based learning (PBL), one brings outside expertise into the classroom. My eighth graders begin the year creating science fiction based origin stories for original superhero characters as an introduction to a greater advocacy unit. Therefore, it seemed natural to bring in an actual scientist. Which brought me to CalTech and Dr. Spyridon Michalakis."

A Hero For The Arts And Sciences: Upcoming Marvel Covers Promote STEAM Fields | STEM Connections | Scoop.it
Last week, the publisher unveiled the last of five special covers featuring disciplines that guide school curricula nationwide — Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math, also known as STEAM. It's part of an effort, the company says, to encourage young readers to double-down on their studies and explore fields said to lead to better jobs.

"We plan to continue to motivate our fans to explore their passions in the fields of science, technology, engineering, art, and math and present these disciplines through some of our favorite young heroes who are doing just that — following their dreams and preparing for the challenges that await them ahead," David Gabriel, Senior VP for Sales & Marketing of Marvel Comics said in a statement.

Available in November, the covers are alternative prints of several titles. Famous heroes such as the Hulk and Spiderman make appearances. So do lesser-knowns Gwenpool — an amalgam of Spiderman's Gwen Stacy and meta-jokester Deadpool — and kid genius Moongirl.

The covers also coincide with the debut of Marvel's new Iron Man, Riri Williams, a 15-year-old engineering prodigy, who is also featured.

America has more than 2.5 million miles of oil and gas pipelines crossing the country in every direction. So plans to construct the 1,172-mile Dakota Access pipeline from oil fields in North Dakota through South Dakota and Iowa to Patoka, Illinois, were supposed to be a nonevent. The regulatory process was largely through state commissions and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and far less stringent than the successfully opposed Keystone XL pipeline.

Before the Laniakea Supercluster was outlined in 2014, most astronomers placed the Milky Way inside the Virgo Supercluster. The Laniakea Supercluster is much bigger, containing about 100,000 galaxies and spanning 520 million light-years. Its name is an homage to Polynesian explorers who navigated the Pacific ocean by looking at the stars, and means "immeasurable heaven" in Hawaiian. The definition of "supercluster" is an evolving one, however, and scientists think that our place in the universe may alter yet again as research continues to advance.

How much life can you find in one cubic foot?

The answer will surprise you. It turns out, quite a lot! Biocubes are hollow one foot cubic frames, that can be placed almost anywhere. They have been used to study mussel beds, rivers, trees, fields, coral reefs, and even the ocean midwater where there is nothing to cling to and no place to hide. 

The Biocube program was inspired by a feature article in National Geographic that involved Smithsonian scientists and led to a book, "A World in One Cubic Foot: Portraits of Biodiversity." The sites featured in the book were documented by photographer David Liittschwager, assisted by a professional field crew and in consultation with various biologists. David set out to document how much life would pass through one cubic foot over the course of a normal day. The cubes were placed around the world and highlighted the staggering biodiversity revealed by studying one cubic foot at a time. Almost every cubic foot sampled yielded more than a hundred different species. Because of the standard sampling size, biocubes can be used to show interesting differences among living communities from different continents, different habitats, and wild versus domesticated land.
