STEM and Writing: A Super Combination - Edutopia

STEM and Writing: A Super Combination - Edutopia | STEM Connections | Scoop.it

"I brought a superhero into my classroom the other day. He wasn't wearing a cape. He didn't have an alias. But he had the greatest superpower of all: inspiration.

When you teach using project-based learning (PBL), one brings outside expertise into the classroom. My eighth graders begin the year creating science fiction based origin stories for original superhero characters as an introduction to a greater advocacy unit. Therefore, it seemed natural to bring in an actual scientist. Which brought me to CalTech and Dr. Spyridon Michalakis."

How One Woman's Discovery Shook the Foundations of Geology

How One Woman's Discovery Shook the Foundations of Geology | STEM Connections | Scoop.it

Seth Dixon's curator insight, December 11, 3:14 PM

I love this article, because it is a fantastic reminder of some excellent principles.

  1. Women in science are awesome and we need to encourage girls in STEM disciplines.
  2. Mapping the unknown can lead to shocking discoveries.
  3. Underlying grand discoveries is tedious work with unexciting data.
  4. It wasn't too long ago that we didn't understand foundational principles about the Earth (such as plate tectonics).

This looks like it has great potential but if you go to the website (which also looks fantastic) not a lot of work has been done since 2010. So make sure the app works before handing over any money - check the recent reviews.
