STEM and Writing: A Super Combination - Edutopia

STEM and Writing: A Super Combination - Edutopia | STEM Connections | Scoop.it

"I brought a superhero into my classroom the other day. He wasn't wearing a cape. He didn't have an alias. But he had the greatest superpower of all: inspiration.

When you teach using project-based learning (PBL), one brings outside expertise into the classroom. My eighth graders begin the year creating science fiction based origin stories for original superhero characters as an introduction to a greater advocacy unit. Therefore, it seemed natural to bring in an actual scientist. Which brought me to CalTech and Dr. Spyridon Michalakis."

As Seas Rise, NASA Zeros In: How Much? How Fast?

As Seas Rise, NASA Zeros In: How Much? How Fast? | STEM Connections | Scoop.it
Seas around the world have risen an average of nearly 3 inches since 1992, with some locations rising more than 9 inches due to natural variation, according to the latest satellite measurements from NASA and its partners. An intensive research effort now underway, aided by NASA observations and analysis, points to an unavoidable rise of several feet in the future. The question scientists are grappling with is how quickly will seas rise?

Virgin Galactic boldly goes into small satellites, telling future astronauts 'you have to wait'

Virgin Galactic boldly goes into small satellites, telling future astronauts 'you have to wait' | STEM Connections | Scoop.it

AC Charania, director of strategy and business development at Virgin Galactic, claims “We are the Uber of small launch.”

“You can’t tell the big rocket where to go and you can’t tell it when to go,” says Charania. “You essentially have to get on a bus.

“With Uber, you go when you want to go, you pick the service you want – UberX or UberXL, it goes exactly where you want and it’s an easy transaction. That’s essentially the model for us.”

On this, the 50th anniversary of the orbital flight of Gemini (pre-Apollo), none of the commercial space-faring companies can even launch a single astronaut into space. Tell me again why private industry does things better than the public sector?
