STEM and Writing: A Super Combination - Edutopia

STEM and Writing: A Super Combination - Edutopia | STEM Connections | Scoop.it

"I brought a superhero into my classroom the other day. He wasn't wearing a cape. He didn't have an alias. But he had the greatest superpower of all: inspiration.

When you teach using project-based learning (PBL), one brings outside expertise into the classroom. My eighth graders begin the year creating science fiction based origin stories for original superhero characters as an introduction to a greater advocacy unit. Therefore, it seemed natural to bring in an actual scientist. Which brought me to CalTech and Dr. Spyridon Michalakis."

A Simple Guide to Design Learning

A Simple Guide to Design Learning  | STEM Connections | Scoop.it
Doris Wells-Papanek of www.designlearning.us published an article in “Innovation Journal” in which she said “Design is to doing as learning is to thinking.” Learning, Wells-Papnek explains, prepares students to think, and design enables them to do. The goal of design learning is to help students become great problem solvers as they progress through the steps of the design learning framework, challenged to be creative but mindful of the task put before them.

Tennessee schools need to teach geography better

Tennessee schools need to teach geography better | STEM Connections | Scoop.it
Geography is a discipline that has students examine the world from cultural, physical, economic, and political standpoints, but you wouldn’t know that in many Tennessee schools.

During their middle and high school years, Tennessee’s students will take five required history courses and no required geography courses. The courses they do take have names that begin with “History and Geography”, but if one examines the full titles and the content of the courses, it is blatantly obvious that these are history courses.

This is the case for the current Social Studies standards and those that are proposed to soon replace the current standards. Some argue that geography can be adequately taught in such hybrid courses, but that is not the way it is taught in any college or university in the state.
