STEM and Writing: A Super Combination - Edutopia

STEM and Writing: A Super Combination - Edutopia | STEM Connections | Scoop.it

"I brought a superhero into my classroom the other day. He wasn't wearing a cape. He didn't have an alias. But he had the greatest superpower of all: inspiration.

When you teach using project-based learning (PBL), one brings outside expertise into the classroom. My eighth graders begin the year creating science fiction based origin stories for original superhero characters as an introduction to a greater advocacy unit. Therefore, it seemed natural to bring in an actual scientist. Which brought me to CalTech and Dr. Spyridon Michalakis."

GIS Day November 15, 2017 - Discovering the World Through GIS

GIS Day November 15, 2017 - Discovering the World Through GIS | STEM Connections | Scoop.it
Discovering the World Through GIS GIS Day provides an international forum for users of geographic information systems (GIS) technology to demonstrate real-world applications that are making a difference in our society. The first formal GIS Day took place in 1999. Esri president and co-founder Jack Dangermond credits Ralph Nader with being the person who inspired the creation of GIS Day. He considered GIS Day a good initiative for people to learn about geography and the uses of GIS. He wanted GIS Day to be a grassroots effort and open to everyone to participate.

Innovation Programs In Schools Can Help Kids Learn More Than Just Facts

Innovation Programs In Schools Can Help Kids Learn More Than Just Facts | STEM Connections | Scoop.it
“We saw a gap between the skills being taught in schools and those that are needed for life,” Hecht told me. In school, every question has a right answer and students are supposed to study to know what that answer is. But in the workplace, the important problems don’t have clear answers. We wanted to design a program that would help kids learn the skills needed to do problems like that.”

See How the Solar Eclipse Will Look From Anywhere in the U.S.

See How the Solar Eclipse Will Look From Anywhere in the U.S. | STEM Connections | Scoop.it
The 2017 total solar eclipse is fast approaching, and hordes of sky gazers are scrambling to find a spot where they can see the shadow of the moon completely obscure the sun for a few moments on Aug. 21.
There's technically plenty of room for every American to pack into the narrow zone from Oregon to South Carolina where the total blackout will occur, shown on this eclipse map. But most of the country will be moored in a place where they will see only a partial eclipse, which occurs when the moon will block anywhere from nearly the entire sun to just a slice of it.
So we decided to create a simulation of the eclipse (above) that shows a view of the sky from any location in the U.S., allowing you to see what the eclipse will look like from anywhere.

Qrius-Jr. Discovery Room- Smithsonian

Bonnie Bracey Sutton's insight:
Q?rius jr. is a hands-on room featuring real Museum objects and artifacts. During Open Hours, visitors explore activities representing exhibitions and behind-the-scenes research at the Museum. Visitors of all ages can look at fossils, skulls, shells and minerals, use a microscope, try on traditional clothing from around the world, and much more! School groups grades K-5 can take advantage of school programs during the school year. What can I do in Q?rius jr.? Search with binoculars for plants and animals on the biodiversity wall, an exhibit showcasing the diversity of species found locally. Examine butterfly wings, rocks, minerals and more under a real microscope. Read a story, color a turtle, or create your own bird. Touch and explore collections of exciting objects from all over the world. Shake hands with a full-size replica of a human skeleton. We offer programs for school groups and for homeschool students. School program registration for the 2017-2018 school year is now open.

New types of human brain cells found in quest for understanding its development & dysfunctions

New types of human brain cells found in quest for understanding its development & dysfunctions | STEM Connections | Scoop.it
“We think it’s pretty striking that we can tease apart a brain into individual cells, sequence their methylomes, and identify many new cell types along with their gene regulatory elements, the genetic switches that make these neurons distinct from each other, ” one of the authors of the study, professor Joseph Ecker, explained.

The team was trying to identify how many types of neurons exist. This is one of the great unanswered questions in neuroscience and experts believe it could lead to a dramatically better understanding of brain development and dysfunction.

Total solar eclipse: What you need to know (VIDEO)

Total solar eclipse: What you need to know (VIDEO) | STEM Connections | Scoop.it
The continental US will experience its first total solar eclipse in 40 years on August 21. Here’s everything you need to know about the celestial event, from how it happens to how to watch it safely.
A total or partial solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes between the Earth and the sun, putting us in the moon’s shadow. It happens about once every six months, but for the first time in 40 years, the path of the moon’s shadow will cross the continental US.
