Change the World: Science & Engineering Careers - (NSF)

Change the World: Science & Engineering Careers - (NSF) | STEM Connections | Scoop.it

Do you have a vested interest in the future science and engineering workforce? U.S. Representative Frank Wolf and the National Science Foundation (NSF) invite you to participate in Change the World: Science & Engineering Careers, a public STEM careers fair to be held Sept. 27-28, 2013.

This event will feature exhibitors with dynamic hands-on activities that demonstrate the many careers in which today's students can change the world and shape the future.

You are encouraged to showcase your own exciting examples of science and innovation, with the goal of encouraging young people, especially in grades 7-12, to consider careers in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math). The fair will also increase public awareness of the innovations that result from public and private investments in science and engineering research and education.

Friday - Saturday, September 27-28, 2013

Dulles Town Center Mall, Dulles, Virginia

All science-related entities are invited to participate by displaying interactive exhibits and engaging stage presentations to encourage our youth to pursue careers in science and engineering.

DEADLINE JULY 30, 2013:

Submit form to Craig Fisher, 703.292.8070, STEMFair@nsf.gov

STEM and Writing: A Super Combination - Edutopia

STEM and Writing: A Super Combination - Edutopia | STEM Connections | Scoop.it

"I brought a superhero into my classroom the other day. He wasn't wearing a cape. He didn't have an alias. But he had the greatest superpower of all: inspiration.

When you teach using project-based learning (PBL), one brings outside expertise into the classroom. My eighth graders begin the year creating science fiction based origin stories for original superhero characters as an introduction to a greater advocacy unit. Therefore, it seemed natural to bring in an actual scientist. Which brought me to CalTech and Dr. Spyridon Michalakis."

Eurasia Foundation

Eurasia Foundation | STEM Connections | Scoop.it
Bonnie Bracey Sutton's insight:
Our core approach is based on the following guiding principles:

Inclusiveness: EF works to amplify the voices of marginalized groups, particularly women, youth, minority populations, and the economically disenfranchised. EF’s programs reach individuals and groups that reside beyond major cities and hubs and lack access to training opportunities, resources, and networks.

Collaboration: EF is committed to building genuine and long-lasting partnerships based on trust and mutual respect. We brainstorm, design, and implement initiatives jointly with our partners on the ground and consistently seek to improve the quality of our work by soliciting input and feedback from stakeholders, partners, and beneficiaries.

Adaptation: EF adapts each of its programs to the distinct and dynamic contexts in which they operate. From addressing barriers to women’s workplace entry to creating platforms for youth participation, we examine individual experiences and use our in-country networks and partners to create interventions and resources that are relevant and useful in the daily lives of our beneficiaries.

Practicality: EF supports the creation of local solutions by building leadership and subject matter expertise within communities. From entrepreneurship to women’s empowerment, EF’s training programs emphasize critical thinking, problem solving, and communication skills, reinforced with practical exercises that help participants apply these new skills in real-life settings.
