STEM and Writing: A Super Combination - Edutopia

STEM and Writing: A Super Combination - Edutopia | STEM Connections | Scoop.it

"I brought a superhero into my classroom the other day. He wasn't wearing a cape. He didn't have an alias. But he had the greatest superpower of all: inspiration.

When you teach using project-based learning (PBL), one brings outside expertise into the classroom. My eighth graders begin the year creating science fiction based origin stories for original superhero characters as an introduction to a greater advocacy unit. Therefore, it seemed natural to bring in an actual scientist. Which brought me to CalTech and Dr. Spyridon Michalakis."

The Great Make: Rocketry Round-Up | Make: DIY Projects and Ideas for Makers | STEM Connections | Scoop.it
Many a Make: reader, especially those of us of a certain age, cut our teeth on building and flying model rockets. This one hobby required you to gain at least a basic aptitude in model construction (and all of the skill sets involved there), basic design and engineering skills, understanding the science and aerodynamics of flight, rudimentary electronics, ballistics, and much more.

Given the importance of rocketry for many of us in developing as makers, it’s no wonder that Make: has covered a ton of rocketry projects of varying stripes over the years, from kiddie water and stomp rockets to serious high-powered efforts. Here is a selection of some of these projects and articles from the past ten years.

A fuel cell for space. Batteries that use air. A way to tap pine trees and extract biofuels like maple syrup from a maple tree. These are just some of the “out-there” energy innovations that researchers and entrepreneurs are hard at work building in labs across the U.S., and which were on display at the fifth annual energy innovation-focused ARPA-E Summit this week.

But here are some questions to ask yourself, as you look back, look within and look forward…"
