STEM and Writing: A Super Combination - Edutopia

STEM and Writing: A Super Combination - Edutopia | STEM Connections | Scoop.it

"I brought a superhero into my classroom the other day. He wasn't wearing a cape. He didn't have an alias. But he had the greatest superpower of all: inspiration.

When you teach using project-based learning (PBL), one brings outside expertise into the classroom. My eighth graders begin the year creating science fiction based origin stories for original superhero characters as an introduction to a greater advocacy unit. Therefore, it seemed natural to bring in an actual scientist. Which brought me to CalTech and Dr. Spyridon Michalakis."

Integrating STEM Learning in Early Childhood Education | RAND

Integrating STEM Learning in Early Childhood Education | RAND | STEM Connections | Scoop.it
Children can understand concepts in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), they enjoy exploring them, and early development of STEM skills seems to support learning later in life. But an effective teaching system is needed before STEM learning can be fully integrated into early childhood education.

Pisa tests to include 'global skills' and cultural awareness

Pisa tests to include 'global skills' and cultural awareness | STEM Connections | Scoop.it

"Pisa tests, an international standard for comparing education systems around the world, could include a new measurement of global skills in the next round of tests in 2018. The OECD, which runs the tests in maths, reading and science, is considering adding another test which would look at how well pupils can navigate an increasingly diverse world, with an awareness of different cultures and beliefs. The OECD's education director Andreas Schleicher explains why there is such a need for new rankings to show young people's competence in a world where globalisation is a powerful economic, political and cultural force.

Education leaders around the world are increasingly talking about the need to teach 'global competences' as a way of addressing the challenges of globalisation."

Seth Dixon's curator insight, May 26, 7:18 PM

They define global competence as: "the capacity to analyse global and intercultural issues critically and from multiple perspectives, to understand how differences affect perceptions, judgements, and ideas of self and others, and to engage in open, appropriate and effective interactions with others from different backgrounds on the basis of a shared respect for human dignity".

So I guess geography does matter then.  Who knew?

What strategies do you use to help your students overcome their psychological barriers to doing well in math?

What strategies do you use to help your students overcome their psychological barriers to doing well in math? | STEM Connections | Scoop.it
As teachers, we are in a unique position to positively influence girls’ attitudes toward math. We can actively counter beliefs and biases that girls aren’t as good as boys in math. We can expose girls to successful female role models who can impact their interest and performance in mathematics. And we can let girls know that they have the right to perform well in math because they can. When we do these things, girls will begin to see themselves as equal to boys in math because they are.

Read this if you are not a confident math instructor. However, it will take a commitment to improve. Start now with a solid PD math series complemented with a supportive cohort and continuing feedback. Be willing to invest the time to read and reflect. Math and science instruction is certainly not one of our strength as educators.

Scientists directly write flexible circuits with high-conductivity graphene inks | #Research #Technology | STEM Connections | Scoop.it
“Soft circuits — circuits based on flexible substrates — have been a hot topic for years now, in fields from medicine to consumer electronics. Graphene would be a nearly perfect material to use for these circuits, if only we could apply it effectively. While it’s extremely conductive, it’s flaky and difficult to manufacture at scale.”

description by The Scout Report

"Nanoscience - the study of how materials take on unique properties when observed at the smallest of scales - has become increasingly important in all areas of science, with profound impacts on medicine, technology, and engineering. However, many members of the public have a hard time understanding this new and exciting field. Enter the National Informal STEM Education Network (NISE Network). Comprised of 14 museums, universities, and professional organizations, the NISE Network produces a variety of materials designed to help scientists, educators, and museum professionals engage the public with nanoscience. Detailed K-12 lesson plans are provided, as well as activities for more informal settings, such as after-school programs. Thanks to the inclusion of videos and detailed lesson descriptions, educators can implement and adapt these activities with ease. All materials are free to download and readers may subscribe to receive a monthly Newsletter to find out about community news, upcoming events, and more."
