Seth Dixon's curator insight, November 27, 2013 11:11 AM

I’ve had the privilege of working with NEGEN (New England Geography Education Network). The great people in the Massachusetts Geographic Alliance have collaborated to create a template to run Family Geography Nights at schools. These Family Nights are incredibly successful in showing the relevance of geography education to administrators, other teachers, parents and the general public.

Tony Aguilar's curator insight, December 1, 2013 12:38 AM

A geography night brings a subject to an interesting focus for students and parents, having interactive playful resources to teach kids about the world around them. They can play parents can ask teachers questions and it overall encourages interest in a subject that may seem complex and difficult to understand at times. With all the dicsiplines of geography that exist it is important to glean a foundational awareness of the world around you, to use as a springboard for the other aspects. These after school events and the fun involved will defintley help the student have a more open mind to learning, information that is practical but somewhat difficult to understand.

This is a resource i feel would be relevant to those students who struggle to be egaged in their reading

This can be used on readers on many different level

the reading maps foccus on language arts, Its description is communicated through charts, graphs, and maps intead of normal paragraphs and text

Shelby Porter's comment, September 30, 2013 8:19 AM
I feel the skill of reading a map is very important, but it becoming less prevalent in classrooms. Teachers may find it more difficult to teach and therefore are not going in depth with it. I remember as a child in grade school we would color maps or have to find where the states are. We never were taught how to fully understand the uses of a map and all the different ways they are used and how to read them. It is becoming a lost skill in a world that needs to be more appreciative of geography.

Many suggest that's those who want more geography education should be satisfied that it is one of the tiers of social studies. But we have seen even social studies be cut to half a year in our elementary schools. How can we build the necessary geographic, civic, economic, and history foundations in such short amount of time? Even now, as we access our news, it daily becomes more apparent how important these studies are.

This video shows how GIS systems can integrated into the curriculum of K-12 students. Pretty much every subject discussed in these curriculums can be expressed with geospatial technologies. For example a science class can use maps that represent different data sets such as areas prone to volcanos, areas prone to hurricanes, and other natural disaster locations. A history class can use maps to represent different historical battles. The possibilities are endless, but the main goal is to introduce GIS at a younger age because it is a fast growing topic.

Geospatial awarness and application is important GIS Day allows people to learn about and plug in to present technology that helps make geopraphy more palpable and easier to understand. There are more and more resources and advancements that have been made available to teach us and simply things in the world around us. understanding relatability and awareness helps us to answer questions about geography that we might not know because of distance and allows those who are preparing to be social studies or history majors to communicate to their students a better understanding of the world around them, and as time passes more helpful resources will be teaching aides in the classroom

Words Matter: How Geospatial Education Suffers Because of Government Classification | STEM Connections | Scoop.it

In a world of information the knowledge of geography is lacking.

Seth Dixon's curator insight, June 29, 2013 8:20 AM

While many in the geography education business bemoan student's lack of global awareness as a rationale for geography education, this is the key angle that I feel we should be pushing: the workforce.  We currently are not producing enough students with geospatial skills in the United States to fill the jobs (one of the problems with geography being classified as a social science).  Now that is a practical reason to support geography that non-geographers can understand.

"Real World Math: Using Google Earth in the Math Curriculum."   Back to my interdisciplinary approach to strengthening geographic education, image hearing that there is a Math teacher at your school using this, wouldn't you want to be a part of it?  Too often knowledge is taught within disciplinary silos; students need opportunities to make real world connections between the disciplines to breath life into how they are taught.  This site reminds me of http://www.googlelittrips.org/ which allows real world geography to be a part of literature/English classes.
