Scientists in Japan said Wednesday they had grown human liver tissue from stem cells in a first that holds promise for alleviating the critical shortage of donor organs.

In this paper scientists demonstrate the generation of vascularized and functional human liver from human iPSCs by transplantation of liver buds created in vitro  (iPSC-LBs) from induced pluripotent stem cells.
