Scientists from Philadelphia have bioprinted a mixture of cancerous cell line called HeLa cells, and hydrogel to form 3D tumors. The HeLa cells line was generated from tumor cells taken from  Henrietta Lacks, in the 1950s and are considered as the first "immortal" line of research cells.

Researchers, led by Prof. Irv Weismann have developed a novel antibody designed to block the so-called "don't eat me" signal from a protein called CD47. That protein, found on the surface of cancer stem cells, prevents the immune system's garbage collectors — white blood cells called macrophages — from devouring the cancer cells. 

Now, the researchers won a CIRM grant, that will allow them to conduct early-stage safety testing early next year in acute myelogenous leukemia patients or patients with several solid tumors.

Now researchers are developing bioprinting technologies to make tissue reconstruction due to mastectomies safer and more accessible .

A company, called TeVido is trying to develope breast implants for cancer patients, derived from the patient's own cells. Inventor of the technology and Co-founder and Chief Technology Officer of TeVido, Thomas Boland, Ph.D, is the Director of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP). His patent-pending method of bioprinting involves using a modified HP Deskjet 340 inkjet printer to distribute proteins that are held in a mixture of gelatin and alginate (long carbohydrate molecules) onto a specialized gel.

A multidisciplinary team of researchers and physicians from Massachusetts General Hospital, the Broad Institute, and the Klarman Cell Observatory have discovered using epigenomics that changes in four transcription factors  switch  non-aggressive brain tumor cells to a very aggressive brain tumor cells.

The authors  identified a mechanism responsible for the naked mole rat’s cancer resistance. They found that naked mole-rat fibroblasts secrete extremely high-molecular-mass hyaluronan (HA), which is over five times larger than human or mouse HA.
