The future of learning - Sugata Mitra

The future of learning - Sugata Mitra | STEM | Scoop.it

In this talk, Sugata Mitra will take us through the origins of schooling as we know it, to the dematerialisation of institutions as we know them. Thirteen years of experiments in children's education takes us through a series of startling results – children can self-organise their own learning, they can achieve educational objectives on their own, they can read by themselves. Finally, the most startling of them all: groups of children with access to the internet can learn anything by themselves. From the slums of India, to the villages of India and Cambodia, to poor schools in Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, the USA and Italy, to the schools of Gateshead and the rich international schools of Washington and Hong Kong, Sugata's experimental results show a strange new future for learning.

Using a Question Building Chart to Provoke Student Thought

Using a Question Building Chart to Provoke Student Thought | STEM | Scoop.it
One of the most effective ways to provoke student thought is through the building of “rich” questions. By asking meaningful questions - and interacting with textual information – students can come to an understanding that builds upon on their own personal experiences and opinions. Through the use of a template, questions can be created in any way that you want and provide you with a specific platform to begin your questioning focus.

The questions can be based on exam questions, or directly from past exam questions.  The students can be asked about their own experiences and say whether the textual information has any application to the society in which they live, e.g. How does the information help us?

Meaningful learning last the longest. Learning applied to solving real life problems makes learning meaningful.....that is after all why we teach and why we  want to learn. Education is not just about getting a job nor is it only about doing something because it's on the next page or a test. That is a reality is hard for both student and teacher to remember. Activites like this can help bring home what education is about.

Ready to Learn? The Key Is Listening With Intention

Ready to Learn? The Key Is Listening With Intention | STEM | Scoop.it

Research on how we learn a second language demonstrates that effective listening involves more than simply hearing the words that float past our ears. Rather, it’s an active process of interpreting information and making meaning. Studies of skilled language learners have identified specific listening strategies that lead to superior comprehension. What’s more, research has shown that learners who deliberately adopt these strategies become better listeners.

We derive the most benefit from observation when we have in mind the conscious intention to carry out the action ourselves. In a 2006 study published in the Journal of Neuroscience, psychologist Scott Frey of the University of Oregon scanned the brains of participants as they watched videos of someone putting together and taking apart a toy made of several parts. One group of subjects simply watched the demonstration; another group was aware that they would be asked to reproduce the actions they viewed on the video.

Self-Organised Learning Environment (SOLEs) in an English School : an example of transformative pedagogy?

Self-Organised Learning Environment (SOLEs) in an English School : an example of transformative pedagogy? | STEM | Scoop.it

The SOLE concept, although flexible, has the potential to offer a divergent, radical transformative pedagogy. This sits somewhat uncomfortably alongside more convergent approaches which position the learner as subservient to the curriculum, with the task of merely mastering subject matter prescribed by the teacher. However, what is notable from this analysis is that transformative pedagogy seems to be positioned alongside, rather than in conflict with, the dominant educational framework.

I'm torn by this. I'm sure that children come back with lots of information from the net, but how well is this translated into deeper understandings? Excerpt: "....Your students can become moviemakers, too, thanks to some powerful apps for mobile devices. With these tools, your children can take videos and edit their work to make professional quality movies using iOS devices (iPads and iPhones) and Android tablets.

One good thing about this easy-to-use technology is that students can still use important English language arts skills like writing a narrative, planning a sequential story, and including key details when getting ready to make a movie. These apps can enhance the work that you are doing with children in the classroom and give them room to be creative storytellers...."
