My passion project for the past year has been developing an online Minecraft learning community and programs as part of Connected Camps, and in collaboration with the Institute of Play. I’m delighted to announce a new set of offerings geared to the schedules and rhythms of the school year, and would like to invite all educators interested in joining the movement for Minecraft in education to join our network.
Educators can sign up to get access to free guides, curriculum, webinars and support for running Minecraft programs. This week we are also unveiling a new free afterschool and weekend online Kid Club, where Minecrafters age 9-13 can log in to a safe, moderated server and join building, design, game, and coding challenges facilitated by our Connected Camps counselors. Kid club participants will reap the benefits of our jam packed Summer of Minecraft, where our counselors developed and refined a whole host of fun and challenging activities. Students aged 9-13 are welcome to join as club members, and high school students can sign up to be volunteer counselors and paid coding counselors. Our server hosts a friendly, fun learning community where members learn digital citizenship, leadership, and collaboration and technical literacy from their peers, more experienced high school and college Minecrafters, and Connected Camps staff. With all of this discussion and promotion of STEM in the United States and jobs in the associated fields, it can sometimes even feel like there's a push to move students away from other fields, and from jobs that don't require very specific STEM...
Helpful as well to consider how integrated STEM and STEAM learning better prepares all students for this thing we now call "daily living" which also requires a tremendous amount of critical thinking, analysis, planning, and tehcnology integration skills.
The human body has hundreds of different cell types, all with the same basic DNA, and all of which can ultimately be traced back to identical stem cells. Despite this fundamental similarity, a bone cell has little in common with a brain cell when it comes to appearance or function. The fact that bone is rigid and mechanically distinct from soft fat or brain had been speculated to play some role in differentiation to new cells in those parts of the body, but mechanisms have been unclear.
Now, a study by researchers at the University of Pennsylvania have shown that a protein found in the nuclei of all cells — lamin-A — plays a key role in the differentiation process.

Chem Collective is a project designed and maintained by Carnegie Mellon University's chemistry department and the National Science Digital Library. On Chem Collective you will find virtual labs for chemistry experiments, simulations, visualizations, tutorials, and auto-graded problems. Students and teachers can search the site by resource type or by chemistry topic.
Design thinking is an approach to learning that includes considering real-world problems, research, analysis, conceiving original ideas, lots of experimentation, and sometimes building things by hand. The projects teach students how to make a stable product, use tools, think about the needs of another, solve challenges, overcome setbacks and stay motivated on a long-term problem. The projects also teach students to build on the ideas of others, vet sources, generate questions, deeply analyze topics, and think creatively and analytically. Many of those same qualities are goals of the Common Core State Standards. (What Does ‘Design Thinking’ Look Like in School?)
I use the following activities to introduce elementary students to the design thinking process. The ultimate goal is for the learners to work on their own, self-selected problems in which they will apply the design thinking.

The Kapor Center has collected information on 300+ programs or software that teach youth and adults elements of computer science and coding. This is not an exhaustive list, as this field is rapidly growing. As stated in the introduction, we’re hoping that the larger community will help us to frequently update this list as programs continue to launch.
The primary objective of this Coding Landscape Database is to catalogue organizations that provide some type of coding training. We’ve generally categorized the range of programs into these clusters:
Bootcamps: Intensives that prepare participants for at least entry-level developer positions.Certifications: Trainings that result in a certification/credential, badge, or belt to identify skill development progress.Corporation-focused: Courses that provide training to corporations or on behalf of a specific corporation.Hackathons: Event in which individuals collaborate in a short and intense time period (typically 24 to 72 hours) to build a mobile or web application.
There are many valuable networks and support organizations that help convene and/or advocate for people who work in the tech and coding space. These organizations were not a focus of this data collection effort, and many are not captured in this database. General STEM-oriented programs were also not a focus of this effort and are largely not included. For an organization to be categorized as a bootcamp, it had to have an intensive program over a set period of time that prepares a participant for at least an entry-level coding job.
In this climate of economic uncertainty, America is once again turning to innovation as the way to ensure a prosperous future.
Yet innovation remains tightly coupled with Science, Technology, Engineering and Math – the STEM subjects. Art + Design are poised to transform our economy in the 21st century just as science and technology did in the last century.
We need to add Art + Design to the equation — to transform STEM into STEAM.

STEAM is a movement championed by Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) and widely adopted by institutions, corporations and individuals.
The objectives of the STEAM movement are to:
