Bill Bentley's curator insight, January 17, 2014 9:35 AM

This article isn't as much weird as it is disappointing.   Yes there are societies that deal with how to use statistics ethically.  You all know that's dishonest people can lie with statistics when they are addressing an audience that isn't skilled at interpreting them, which is most of us.

The fact that this agency 'disbarred' a major government's data source says a lot about the kind of low-class people we are electing into our governments.  Perhaps in this age of data, all politicians should be required to pass a basic statistics test in order to run for office and sign one of the ethical statatements promising to use data correctly.   As a well known US national elected official said recently "You don't have to pass an IQ test to run for Congress"  Couldn't have said it better myself.

MacAnova: A Program for Statistical Analysis and Matrix Algebra

MacAnova: A Program for Statistical Analysis and Matrix Algebra | Statistical Analysis | Scoop.it

MacAnova is a free, open source, interactive statistical analysis program for Windows, Macintosh, and Linux written by Gary W. Oehlert and Christopher Bingham, both of the School of Statistics, University of Minnesota.

In spite of its name, MacAnova is not just for Macintosh computers and not just for doing Analysis of Variance.

MacAnova has many capabilities but its strengths are analysis of variance and related models, matrix algebra, time series analysis (time and frequency domain), and (to a lesser extent) uni- and multi-variate exploratory statistics. The current version is 5.05 release 1.

Intro to the Principles of Quantum Statistics I

Intro to the Principles of Quantum Statistics I | Statistical Analysis | Scoop.it

This chapter we will study one of the most important assumptions of the quantum theory, the symmetrization postulate, and its consequence for the statistical properties of an ensemble of particles at thermal equilibrium.

The three representative distribution func- tions, Maxwell-Boltzmann, Bose-Einstein and Fermi-Dirac distributions, are introduced here.

Then, we will describe the other important assumption of the quantum theory, the non-commutability of conjugate observables, and its consequence for the uncertainty product in determining a certain pair of observables.

The discussions in this chapter pro- vide the foundation of thermal noise and quantum noise. Most of the discussions in this chapter follow the excellent texts on stastical mechanics by F. Rief and on quantum mechanics by C. Cohen-Tannoudji et al.

".... Previously, we investigated the statistical thermodynamics of ideal gases using a rather ad hoc combination of classical and quantum mechanics.

In fact, we employed classical mechanics to deal with the translational degrees of freedom of the constituent particles, and quantum mechanics to deal with the non-translational degrees of freedom.

Let us now discuss ideal gases from a purely quantum mechanical standpoint. It turns out that this approach is necessary to deal with either low temperature or high density gases.

Furthermore, it also allows us to investigate completely non-classical ``gases,'' such as photons or the conduction electrons in a metal.... "
