Think Like a Start-Up

Think Like a Start-Up | Startup Revolution | Scoop.it
I've worked for big companies and started four. Itis my experience trying to create something from nothing that most resonates and is real vent to my current job as Director Marketing for Atlantic Business Technologies. Thinking like a startup is something I try to do daily :). Marty

I’ve been fascinated with startup culture for a long time and as I considered all the changes happening in academic libraries (and higher ed) the parallels were quite stunning. No, we’re not developing new products to bring to market, and no, we’re not striving for an IPO payday, but we are being required to rethink/rebuild/repurpose what a library is and what it does. The next twenty years are going to be an interestingly chaotic time for the history of our institutions.

7 Deadly Sins of Start-ups

7 Deadly Sins of Start-ups | Startup Revolution | Scoop.it

**** I would add a few too such as being in it for the wrong reasons usually having to do with money, fame, power (the usual suspects) and believing you can half manipulate your way to any of those things. To those goofy people I recommend reading Cluetrain or Linchpin by Seth Godin. The first will tell you you've missed that whole "manipulate to millions" window. The second, Seth's latest book, explains how you need to approach life these gift economy days. Marty

Sworly is Pinterest for audiophiles, but this copycat has potential

Sworly is Pinterest for audiophiles, but this copycat has potential | Startup Revolution | Scoop.it

We’ve seen our fair share of Pinterest clones in the past month, from the most blatant copycat sites that make no effort to disguise what they’re doing, to the sites that are aiming for an even more niche audience than Pinterest itself.

Then there are sites like Sworly, which at first glance look an awful lot like Pinterest and function an awful lot like Pinterest, but bring enough of a difference to the table to warrant a closer look.

Landing Pages That Sell

Landing Pages That Sell | Startup Revolution | Scoop.it

Two factors, taken from the structure of Hollywood blockbusters, can work together to make all the difference in building landing pages that sell.

**** Put this scoop in Startups because if a startup can do NOTHING else online other than have 40 great landing pages faced up against the right (or even close to right) keywords life can be good. The web is really no more complicated that that and yest great landing pages can be complicated (why I suggested 40 so 5 might rock). Marty

Use Your Feeds To Create Pinterest-Like Magazine With Feeed

Use Your Feeds To Create Pinterest-Like Magazine With Feeed | Startup Revolution | Scoop.it
**** Cool and beautiful aggregator for feeds like Scoop.it but for your feeds. Great idea and what I thoughtvFlipboard would be. Marty

Robin Good: Feeed is a simple and elegant web-service which allows you to easily create a Pinterest-like visual magazine by aggregating any number of blogs or RSS feeds.

Just input the URL of your blog, Twitter channel, and any other site or feed you may want to include (up to 8) and Feeed will automatically aggregate and display all of the incoming content into a neat visual page.

"Take everything you like to read – blogs, news, art and more – and get it all delivered to a site designed especially for you, by you."

Feeed.co can also be utilized as your personal news dashboard by making it easier for you to check and monitor your favorite RSS feeds on Feeed visual display. It is possible to see both all of the feeds aggregated into one as well as any individual feed alone.

The basic service is free to use and the Plus version costing $39/year allows you to:
a) add up to 40 feeds,

b) use your own domain name,

c) mix'n'match colors to make your own custom theme, and

d) mark items as favorites

Marketing For Non-Marketers

Marketing For Non-Marketers | Startup Revolution | Scoop.it

Can a teapot be heroic?

Every marketer reading this knows the answer. "It must be or it won't connect, sell and I am out of a job," my marketing friends are thinking. Marketing is and always will be about the hero's journey. And yes even teapots can be heroic as OXO proves in my piece (have to read it to know why). Many non-marketers think marketers are wizards or used car salesmen such as MadMen's Don Draper.

Don wouldn't last long in a flat, furious and connected world. Don's story is, strangely, an honest representation of what marketing really is - great story telling about a hero's journey toward some greater truth.

I wrote Marketing for Non-Marketers to help my programmer and designer friends understand the journey we are about to take togehter, the journey we marketers always take - the hero's journey.

Don't let me take this (or any) journey alone. Please share your favorite "Marketing is..." resources, ideas and comments. Together we are more heroic than alone :).

Thanks, Marty  (@ScentTrail)

Rethinking Business

Rethinking Business | Startup Revolution | Scoop.it

Are we moving to a more open and transparent world, one that challenges all of us business owners to rethink the way we do business, the way we organize, and the way we lead our employees?

There is a school of thought, that suggests that we are, and that business owners need to adopt a new management paradigm, to ensure that in the years ahead, their businesses will survive and prosper, rather than sliding slowly into oblivion.

This short four minute video, attempts to make a strong case for all business owners to start rethinking their approach to leading, managing an operating their businesses, and it does provide food for serious thought (it also has a good backing track).
