Why Groupon Doesn't Work - New Media Leaders | Startup Revolution | Scoop.it

I wrote this piece for New Media Leaders because GROUPON is a brand wrecking ball. Groupons absurd deals destroy years of hard work on small business value propositions.

Least you think I am piling on, Groupon fired Founder Andrew Mason today, I've been meaning to write this article for a long time. Just wasn't mad enough until today (lol).

Startup SpotTrot Rocks STUFF For Dave Matthews & Others [Friends of Marty's]

Startup SpotTrot Rocks STUFF For Dave Matthews & Others [Friends of Marty's] | Startup Revolution | Scoop.it
The chart-topping and award-winning songwriter also loves technology. His investment in Charlottesville, Va.-based SpotTrot is letting musicians, entertainers, sports teams and athletes sell goods over mobile devices for the first time.
Martin (Marty) Smith's insight:

If you don't know about the cool Mobile App my friends Patrick and Blake at SpotTrot have created you should and you will. Love how Blake and Patrick narrowed their focus, understood their very cool customers’ needs and began fixing stuff so bands can make money from STUFF. Since few bands make money from "record" sales anymore STUFF pays the bills and SpotTrot helps.

Very cool. Love it when friends with great ideas make good, and there are lessons for all startup entrepreneurs in SpotTrot's victory including:

* Narrow your focus.
* Find real pain points and solve the problem.
* Doing something COOL helps scale.
* Start ugly and improve as you go.

* Listen more than you talk.

* Innovate and then innovate again.
* MOBILE is changing everything.

Discovery Marketing A New Way To Start The Buzz Train – Bazaarvoice Blog

Discovery Marketing A New Way To Start The Buzz Train – Bazaarvoice Blog | Startup Revolution | Scoop.it
Everywhere consumers go, they are inundated with products and services – both local and global. We live in a time where everything is available all the
Martin (Marty) Smith's insight:

Discover Marketing
This is an interesting article on "new to me" marketing channel. Discovery marketing creats a "buzz team" of people willing to see things first, provide feedback and start the word of mouth train. I couldn't tell if the people receiving the goods are on a subscription or are receiving the goods free.

This idea of a "buzz team" isn't completely new. We created a team of trained reviewers when I was a Director of Ecommerce. Amazon has thousands fighting to be one of the top 1,000 reviewers because you get free books once that status is achieved.

Malcolm Gladwell discussed Mavens, Connectors and Salespeople in The Tipping Point. He also discussed how not everyone on your customer list is equal. Some have the ability to help DEFINE your messaging (Mavens), some can SPREAD the word (connectors) and some can help you WIN hearts and minds (Salespeople).

Discovery marketing is an interesting idea that, here I agree with Bazaar Voice, needs more study and thinking before it is ready for prime time, but may be all kinds of startup fodder in here.

Medical device companies were the major winner of venture capital investment to the healthcare sector, but what types of medical device companies are getting the funding? (Medical device companies remain preferred destination for VC dollars in 2012.
Martin (Marty) Smith's insight:

Great report on healthcare VC. Here is my favorite futher definition:

As medical devices is a broad category, we peeled back the funding a bit to see which sub-industries within medical devices are garnering most of the funding.  Looking specifically at Q4, surgical devices led the way with $197M in funding dollars. Therapeutic devices and imaging & diagnostic equipment came in second and third snagging $111M and $77M in funding, respectively.

Sign up for WriterAccess and satisfy your content needs. Our content marketplace connects clients with freelance writers via the cloud. Call us at 617-227-8800!
Martin (Marty) Smith's insight:

Cool writer marketplace created by my friend Byron White. Byron is a brilliant entrepreneur who literal wrote the book on how to write BOTH for search engine spiders and to engage an audience.

WriterAccess points out the power of platforms over websites. I spoke with Byron today to catch up and he emphasized how much more powerful creating a market place has been. Helps to have a great programmer who gets it too as Byron does.

Content is king. No matter how much content you are creating it isn't enough. My recommendation would be to supplement any Internet marketing teams output with writers who know about "stop words" and great headlines.

Find them at my friend Byron's WriterAccess. Oh, and if you are a writer use WriterAccess to find clients who, as Byron just told me on the phone, "Focus on the writing".

5 Ways To Disrupt Your Internet Marketing [ + Marty Note For Startups]

5 Ways To Disrupt Your Internet Marketing [ + Marty Note For Startups] | Startup Revolution | Scoop.it

I don't like to say Internet marketers MUST do things without sharing HOW to do them.

This follow up piece to Why Your Internet Marketing Must Disrupt To Win shares 5 ways to disrupt your business vertical. Here are 5 ways you set THEIR (your competitors) houses on fire while your Internet marketing goes into overdrive.

Martin (Marty) Smith's insight:

You might think startups are disruptive on their face. To be a startup is to be disruptive. Yeah, not so much as it turns out. Startups are often highly disruptive around their invention and highly conventional in the rest of their approach.

In my Startup Heroes articles for Technorati I interviewed a number of successful entrepreneurs. Every startup who achieved scale understood how to play the Chinese Finger Puzzle game of Internet marketing.

Startups such as ShareFile, sold to Citrix for $50M, balanced disruptive roots with becoming an adult, with growing up and responding to a quickly maturing marketplace with more disruption.

Content marketing is a rapidly maturing idea. We are beyond the tipping point now so low hanging fruit was eaten by others. This means you must DISRUPT to win.

Hate to welcome a new generation of small businesses to Internet marketing just in time to say what you thought you would be doing, content marketing, isn't going to be enough by half.

Sorry and welcome to Internet marketing.
