I Want a New DRUG: Plumbers and the Poetry of Material Things

I Want a New DRUG: Plumbers and the Poetry of Material Things | Startup Revolution | Scoop.it

Art Of The New Ecom
Doesn't this cool Tumblr feel like a new cool store? That is because it has an artists visual approach combined with a merchant's eye. Beautiful and strange like the new ecommerce :).

Martin (Marty) Smith's insight:

SoLoMo Nightmare

I came home to see water seeping into my garage from my house. A leak in a downstairs half bath has done some serious damage and may be doing more now (if it is in the wall).

I look for a plumber stating with Angie's list. Bad Experience because the search algorithm is stiff and pitching a strange set (probably those paying the freight to be at the top). Every plumber has an A review and putting in people I know about was only a fifty fifty shot to find anything at all.

 Where Is The BEAUTY? FUN?
I'm confused. We've got Pinterest, Twitter and Facebook and looking for a plumber is a hair's difference from using the yellow pages. I moved from Angie's LOST List to Google and Yelp reviews.

If Angie's LOST List seems rigged and inauthentic Yelp and Google have no scale. I tweeted and asked friends on Facebook if anyone knew of a good plumber. My friend Kate saved the day with a great recommendation.

I Want A New Drug!

Here is the problem in my head we are already working in the predictive real time of Web 3.0, but the reality of this brutal plumber search makes me wonder why an army of startups isn't thinking about social reviews like the one Kate just provided.

Social reviews can be very brief because they come from such trusted sources (friends). Kate should have been rewarded for her immediate and high quality thought. Instead her great idea disappeared into Facebook's either. Where is the tag cloud when you need it?

I Want A New Drug!

Call me crazy but the process of finding a plumber should be beautiful. I'm using this beautiful Tumblr feed again, the Poetry Of Material Things to point out that a sad truth.

The problem is US. We lack the imagination to mashup scaled systems to produce, reward and scale a reviews / recommendation engine that provides beauty, immediacy and support. Why? Because we can, because we HAVE a new drug called the Internet.

If you are a startup or so inclined and have already spent some mental cycles on this let's grab lunch. If I can't fund you I know people who can. Tell me the story of how looking for a plumber can be beautiful and fun and you have the proverbial million-dollar idea.

This great blog post captured by curator Robin Good talks about platforms and the gang of four (Amazon, Google, Apple, and Facebook).

"Today’s dizzying pace of change shows no signs of abating. If anything, it is likely to accelerate. So do everything you can to heed these lessons today, to be as prepared as possible for a vastly different tomorrow."

The ten lessons identified remind me also of the work of Rita McGrath (End of Competitive Advantage) who talks about six key areas in what she calls "The New Strategy Playbook":

1. Continuous Reconfiguration
2. Healthy Disengagement
3. Deft Resource Allocation

Crowdfunding Tips In 2 Minutes [Video + Marty Note]

You might know Stuart Ashens from his wildly successful (and hilarious) YouTube channel: http://www.youtube.com/user/ashens He's currently running a campaign...
Martin (Marty) Smith's insight:

Crowdfunding Is Marketing Now

Scooped a post yesterday about #Startups using Contests and Games to sidestep traditional PR. Sidestepping is necessary because "traditional PR" lies in tatters on the ground. Crowdfunding isn't crowdfunding.

I had a good friend complain that it would take him as long to crowdfund as to raise money for his startup with VC. I didn't think of it at the time, but the correct comeback is, "Don't think in OR think in AND".

We tend to zero sum everything. Don't think of crowdfunding as zero sum, you do it INSTEAD of something else. Think of crowdfunding as an AND. You create crowdfunding AND you distribute a press release AND you create a social campaign AND so on.

What I love about the Pebble Watch crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter is not that they were able to raise $11M, though that is pretty cool. I love the way Pebble used OPP (Other People Platforms) to solve every startup problem from distribution to celebrity endorsements.

Crowdfunding your marketing forces a level of creativity it may not achieve without the exercise of crowddfunding, so don't think of crowdfunding as crowdfunding think of it as one of the very important tactical "AND" moves in your marketing plan.

Agree with Zachary Gerhman (@ZachGersh). There is no reason to devote money and years of your life to an incremental improvement on what is already out there when there are such HUGE needs virtually untouched.

A few months ago I wrote about how Internet marketing must disrupt to win (http://scenttrail.blogspot.com/2012/12/why-your-internet-marketing-must.html) in this well written and comprehensive post on startups Zachary conclusively argues the same idea for startups.

Startups Take Note: Why SMBs Don't Do Online Marketing

Startups Take Note: Why SMBs Don't Do Online Marketing | Startup Revolution | Scoop.it

Why are small to medium sized businesses continuing to put money in ValPak and yellow pages? Habit, time and buying those traditional and no dying means of advertising a local business are EASY. Digital marketing is anything BUT easy and that should be a clarion call to Startups.

Martin (Marty) Smith's insight:

BizHive To The Rescue

This article should make startups sit up and take notice. This article won't be a surprise to Dave Walker and the team at BizHive.com, a startup dedicated to "normalizing" online marketing so things like email marketing, social media and digital coupons are easy for SMBs to buy.

Startups Take Note
Other startups take note. SMBs continue to put money into dead or dying ideas such as ValPak and Yellow Pages out of habit and because of past results. Many were burned by GroupOn Ads (see my post for New Media Leaders on Why Groupon Doesn't Work: http://newmedialeaders.com/getting-it-right/why-groupon-doesnt-work-380/

Startup SpotTrot Rocks STUFF For Dave Matthews & Others [Friends of Marty's]

Startup SpotTrot Rocks STUFF For Dave Matthews & Others [Friends of Marty's] | Startup Revolution | Scoop.it
The chart-topping and award-winning songwriter also loves technology. His investment in Charlottesville, Va.-based SpotTrot is letting musicians, entertainers, sports teams and athletes sell goods over mobile devices for the first time.
Martin (Marty) Smith's insight:

If you don't know about the cool Mobile App my friends Patrick and Blake at SpotTrot have created you should and you will. Love how Blake and Patrick narrowed their focus, understood their very cool customers’ needs and began fixing stuff so bands can make money from STUFF. Since few bands make money from "record" sales anymore STUFF pays the bills and SpotTrot helps.

Very cool. Love it when friends with great ideas make good, and there are lessons for all startup entrepreneurs in SpotTrot's victory including:

* Narrow your focus.
* Find real pain points and solve the problem.
* Doing something COOL helps scale.
* Start ugly and improve as you go.

* Listen more than you talk.

* Innovate and then innovate again.
* MOBILE is changing everything.

Discovery Marketing A New Way To Start The Buzz Train – Bazaarvoice Blog | Startup Revolution | Scoop.it
Everywhere consumers go, they are inundated with products and services – both local and global. We live in a time where everything is available all the
Martin (Marty) Smith's insight:

Discover Marketing
This is an interesting article on "new to me" marketing channel. Discovery marketing creats a "buzz team" of people willing to see things first, provide feedback and start the word of mouth train. I couldn't tell if the people receiving the goods are on a subscription or are receiving the goods free.

This idea of a "buzz team" isn't completely new. We created a team of trained reviewers when I was a Director of Ecommerce. Amazon has thousands fighting to be one of the top 1,000 reviewers because you get free books once that status is achieved.

Malcolm Gladwell discussed Mavens, Connectors and Salespeople in The Tipping Point. He also discussed how not everyone on your customer list is equal. Some have the ability to help DEFINE your messaging (Mavens), some can SPREAD the word (connectors) and some can help you WIN hearts and minds (Salespeople).

Discovery marketing is an interesting idea that, here I agree with Bazaar Voice, needs more study and thinking before it is ready for prime time, but may be all kinds of startup fodder in here.
