Panda, Penguin, Hummingbird's Secret Implication = Storytelling It feels like we are about to enter a storytelling renaissance across many media (video, web copy, infographics) because the secret implication o f Google's many algorithm changes is things that keep people on your site are GOOD. Things that drive people from your site are BAD. Ever know anyone to leave in the middle of a great story? These days we are all so phone-centric breaking one spell with another is key. Here is a great deck sharing Pixar's storytelling secrets such as: * You admire characters more for their trying than their success. * Audience Love different things than writers do.
* Simplify. Focus. Combine (and learn to love giving stuff up).
* What is your character GREAT AT? Now challenge them with the opposite of what they are great at. * Endings are HARD, so figure it out before the middle.
* Finish your story, let go move on, do better next time. That last line about letting go speaks to not "Sistine Chapeling", or seeking a false perfection. Send your website out into the world to grow up since your products, content and marketing can only become great by failing a little.

Agree with this post. You might think crowdfunding around Christmas would be great. Not so much since there is so much NOISE and competition for every dollar. Can you tell a great story and still get crowdfunded in 4Q? Sure, but exceptions make rules. The possible exception may be nonprofits whose donations would be tax deductible. Even then every nonprofit is aware of the end of the year rush to take advantage of tax deductibility and because people feel good will toward each other during the holidays (or that is the theory :). My preference would be to come in after the first of the year. Wait too long and you miss planning cycles, go too soon and you can get caught up in New Year's resolution and post-holiday assessments. My second time would be dog days of summer. That timing may seem strange, but after July fourth nothing much happens until back to school begins in mid-August. The other lesson I learned by launching http://www.curecancerstarter.org, our crowdfunding cancer research website, is to seed your campaigns. Launch when you have 25% of the funding set. Seeding creates a sense of momentum and excitement. Most crowdfunding campaigns start strong, bow in the middle and then finish up strong (as they head into deadlines). Saw a stat on Kickstarter that campaigns with at least 25% in by the end of the first week have an 80% chance of being funded. Have a "funding party" and line up your donors on a "roll call" count basis. If you are asking for $10K, and most Kickstarter campaigns are funded for $10K or less, then make sure you have $3K (or so) in the campaign in the first few days. YOUR list is very important too. Your list is the key to reaching "friends of friends" (or people you don't know). Great to think your idea would be picked up by the NYT, but better to work your list and ask for two things: $ MONEY. Advocacy (with their friends). Every #startup out there knows all about feeling like Red Adair the famous oil well fire fighter John Wayne played in the movies. That is what I feel like today. Yesterday we launched http://www.curecancerstarter.org and it looks great, but our donation engine was down. GOOD NEWS is our donation engine for 2 of the 3 cancer centers is working fine now (Roswell Park and UW Carbone). UNC isn't working yet, but we are testing like mad (trying to cap the fire). The Duke Cancer Institute will be adding campaigns soon. Back to fire fighting, something every startup knows about.
Creating A Revoltion is HARDMay be hard, but MOVEMENTS are powerful ideas. Campaigns are not movements. Campaigns are more about YOU than THEM. My advice is learn secrets for revolutionaries and remove US vs. THEM makreting in favor of Save The World Marketing.

November SEC ruling makes crowfunding stocks closer and the ruling changed the game:
"The law changes the landscape," said Shmerling, InCrowd's chief executive officer.
Federal lawmakers included crowdfunding in the 2012 Jumpstart Our Business Startups Act as a way to ease financing to small businesses. The SEC's proposed rules will be open 90 days for public comment.
While companies will be capped at raising $1 million per year through equity crowdfunding, Shmerling said it's an option for startups looking to raise under $100,000 to create an initial concept, prototype or business model.

The 'digital experience' is changing marketing. People still respond emotionally to an 'increasing' numer of stimuli. The art of getting a response must adapt to the new media. Every day new tools and new ways to reach the client appear.
Successful companies understand this. Companies such as Google, Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter, focus new ways of reaching out to the comsumers' not so new emotional respons. Reaching out has grown into a huge "new" phenomena called social media.
Playing our new social media games well and understanding them will mean success or failure.

This is a great list and the piece starts with great quotes. I've started 4 companies. The biggest generated more than $16M in specialty gift sales and put products you may know into our popular lexicon (Magnetic Poetry Kit, Zen Board now Buddha Board). One idea I use to find the next thing to work on is creating a thought experiment. Thought experiments always start with a question. Last night I worked on an idea sparked by an interesting question from my tenure as an Ecommerce Director:Q: Is there a way to TEST before spending money? Quirky.com and Threadless harness the power of crowds to only product ideas with enough built in Day One support success is all but assured. My question was about how to create a process requiring little investment in time or capital that could help reduce the risk of any capial spent. I was able to answer that question in the affirmative and hope to share the idea soon (still in the could tell you but then would have to kill you stage :).
Isn't this something we would all like? We've got to keep looking.

Great Neil Ferree Post meant for Lawyers but equally applicable to startups and any online business (and what business isn't an online business now?). Lawyer capitulation is particularly interesting because lawyers worry about content creation's legal implications more than any other business. For an "inside baseball" lawyer website like this one to explain the importance of content marketing supported by social shares means the costs of NOT participating are so much greater than the liabilities of creating great content marketing supported by social. If "not joining" the movement is so clear to lawyers the same implicaitons should be clear to all. I work with many healthcare providers and they should read this post too. Anyone with QUALMS or worries about content marketing and social shares should read this post since it explains the prohibitive costs of NOT joining the content and social marketing party already in progress. Yes the article is a tad technical, but your takeaway should be if LAWYERS are encouraging other LAWYERS to create and support content the last brick in the dam is in place. Any continued denial, obfuscation or non-acceptance of content and social marketing will be expensive (as in you won't be here much longer). We can discuss the need to be GREAT later, right now let's simply agree Content Marketing and Social PRESENCE are DEMANDED.

I lifted Eric Ries' Lean Startup book cover on purpose. Today I realized that what a #startup actually IS has changed a lot. Lisa Gansky hinted at these changes in her book Meshing It, but creating http://www.curecancerstarter.org is making the need to design conversations and collaborate with existing scaled partners a clear WINNER for any startup. GOOGLE is the reason. Google's system now rewards existing trusted site almost to the exclusion of everyone else. Startups don't have the TIME needed to create the TRUST required so find a partner and hop on their back... at least for a little bit while you are through the now very brutal MVP (minimal viable product) phase.
Today is my day to say THANK YOU to a mentor, coach and fellow cancer survivor. Today is Mark Traphagen (@MarkTraphagen) day on http://www.curecancerstarter.org. Today is CureCancerStarter's second day in existence and it is dedicated to a man who has taught me more about the wonders of GooglePlus that I ever believed existed (full convert now). More than Mark's particular expertise is his demonstration of the GIVE NOW and worry about everything else later philosophy. When I asked Mark to speak at my Free Internet Saturday meeting he didn't calculate ROI or the reach of the event he came, shared and helped make the idea bigger. This SHARE FIRST idea is at the CORE of CureCancerStarter.org, a new website that costs a lot in development but is FREE to use and NO HOUSE MONEY. 100% of donations go to the cancer research our donors want to donate to. Some would say creating such an idea with my Atlantic BT salary, life savings and a generous grant from Atlantic BT is crazy. I say it is right, true and valuable and I learned that idea, at least partially, from Mark Traphagen. My "startup" CureCancerStarter.org is working its way LIVE today. This is a day a year in the making and more thanks is owed than can be given. Helping cancer patients, their friends and families look behind the cancer research curtain to feel a sense of empowerment and inclusion is our mission. I'm a cancer survivor and we won't make any MONEY from our substantial investment (thus "startup" in quotes). We are placing a "new economy" bet. We are betting that lessons learned and about ability to connect with such an important mission, curing cancer, will provide return. If that sounds like magical thinking it may be, but, as a cancer survivor who really shouldn't be here if all that mattered was what is down on paper, I know that this "startup" will help change the way we think about and fund cancer research and so CHANGE THE WORLD. My advice to any startup is anytime you can CHANGE THE WORLD you should take it since those opportunities don't come around all that often. We hope you will JOIN US to help create a new cancer research revolution, one that cures cancer in OUR lifetime. Thanks, Marty
