3 Ideas Your Startup Can Steal From Warby Parker

3 Ideas Your Startup Can Steal From Warby Parker | Pitch it! | Scoop.it
By mapping Warb Parker’s success, you’ll find three sweeping, broad ideas your startup can steal and incorporate in its own business plan.

Every so often a company comes along and executes on a business plan so simple that it leaves thousands of would-be entrepreneurs on the sidelines asking one shared question, “Why didn’t I think of that?” Warby Parker, a stylish, high-end eyewear retailer, is one of those companies. Since 2010, the company has sold more than 500,000 pairs of glasses and become an inspiration for other aspiring businesses.

How’d they do it in such a short amount of time? Their business’ plan was simple: offer a quality product that consumers feel good about buying, all at a price that wildly undercuts the competition. Now, that isn’t exactly a world-shattering idea. But what’s noteworthy, and what your business should pay attention to, is the way Warby Parker has succeeded in bringing its vision to life.

This is a graphic example for the article, but the site is a cybersafety site in the UK and has lots of information for parents about online safety for their children. It also tests their knowledge.

Rachael Johnston's curator insight, October 20, 2014 10:53 PM

It is important to build your own brand and to promote yourself positively. You want to be polite to other users and make sure you have nothing on your profile that could be damaging to your reputation. This includes swear words, inappropriate or rude comments, and pictures and videos of drinking or drugs.  This is really important for graduating students who, most likely, need to go through and delete pictures that have been tagged in one Facebook

Make sure you give credit to others if you share something of theirs. Also make sure you are writing your own posts and not just sharing others. However, make sure you are posting valuable and relevant information. Listen and think before you write and make sure you are using proper english.

It is okay to have debates on social netowrks with other users, everybody has the right ti voice their opinion, but don't let things get too personal or nasty.

It is also essential to understand that there are also hings to be very careful of when using social networks. For one, people are not always who they seem. You should also make sure you do not assume a false identity. It is important to keep some kind of professionalism, but don't change yourself or hide who you really are.

You must also make sure you are abiding by the rules of the network and report others who dont.

Last but certainly not least, be very careful about who you share things with. There are certain places to share certain things. For example, you may post something bout your personal life in your Facebook status, but it is not appropriate to do so on your LinkedIn profile. Do not share pictures and videos with strangers, you never know how they will use these.

9 Startup Habits That Will Transform Your Work

9 Startup Habits That Will Transform Your Work | Pitch it! | Scoop.it

When I left journalism school, I and half of the grad students in my class entered the job market as freelancers. (It's a tough market for journalists, even today). And then a peculiar thing happened: all of these amazing, Columbia-educated journalists who'd written for The New York Times and NBC and Time Magazine started approaching me for help—despite the fact that they were far better writers than me. In the past, I had run a website consultancy, so my friends asked my advice on building a website, promoting themselves online, getting clients, managing invoices and taxes, and so on. Essentially, they needed help becoming entrepreneurs, which required an entirely different skillset than the journalist's craft. While some of what we freelancers needed was practical (sales skills, websites, etc.), what we really had to do was start thinking of ourselves as startups. But truthfully, startup skills are not just useful to the self-employed app developer or forced-into-freelance journalist. The habits—and the mindset—of successful entrepreneurs are becoming increasingly valuable in every 21st century workplace.Having spent most of my life around entrepreneurs—and having attempted to mimic their best moves in my work as a business owner, then freelancer, and now startup founder—I'm convinced that the following habits will make anyone twice as successful, not to mention employable:

Virtual school gives teen entrepreneur freedom to thrive

Virtual school gives teen entrepreneur freedom to thrive | Pitch it! | Scoop.it

When Willow Tufano left a public school for the gifted three years ago and enrolled in Florida Virtual School, she discovered a doorway to opportunity.

No longer confined to a typical school day, the eighth-grader spent mornings and afternoons combing Craigslist and garage sales for electronics and other items, then sold them for a profit. At night, she studied English and algebra, keeping up her grades and socking away enough cash to buy a house with her mom, a real estate broker.

At 14, Willow became a landlord. Then she saved enough for another house. Two years later, the Palm Island, Fla., teen has sold both houses and is finishing her sophomore year online with Florida Virtual School, earning mostly A’s and B’s, while fielding offers from Hollywood for a reality TV show.
