Electric cars-many differing opinions ?
The argument over whether or not the electric car is a greener alternative or not rages on. The main reason is the use of "dirty" fuels produced by the Power plants that most countries use to power our national grids. The excerpts following my opinion are in the against bracket of opinions and you must admit they both make sense.
My opinion is vey similar, what if all the thousands of electric cars were plugged in at the end of the working day, would the national grids be able to cope with the surge in demand, I dont think so?. We have not really started to address the problem of building electric starting spaces for thousands of cars when say visiting the local shopping centre(shopping Mall). I have not even seen one here in Yorkshire where i live, yet these cars are been churned out. Claiming to be our saviours, I am not convinced. I think that these cars may be part of the big "mix". If you can imagine it, we would need massive charging stations the size of a football pitch, to cope with some of the electric cars that needed to have their batteries charged at any one time, it would totally caotic as all the cars got their charging wires crossed?... "But, do proponents of electric cars know where electricity comes from? It comes from generating plants, many of which are powered by coal. Some are fueled by natural gas and a few others by nuclear reaction. Gas and nuclear are much cleaner than coal (despite what the coal lobby says), but building either is expensive and a nuclear plant has little, if any, chance of being built. The cost is prohibitive and the public resistance is well-documented.
Further, let's pretend that 70 percent of the country suddenly bought electric vehicles and that 70 percent went home in the evening and plugged them in.
The U.S. power grid is old. It is safe and dependable, for now. But some experts believe that the U.S. is headed for rolling blackouts if the system is not upgraded soon - and that's without millions of electric cars being plugged in at the same time"...More opinion from Mike Jones http://www.tulsaworld.com/opinion/article.aspx?subjectid=213&articleid=20120916_213_G6_Aeiasa939089
"My ridicule of those who tout technology as the solution to everything, including oil-based transport, does not also imply that I am denying that technological breakthroughs are possible. Obviously, some breakthroughs could occur. However, it seems to me that it's far too late now in 2012 to count on technological breakthroughs which can only marginally affect 21st century outcomes. That's like closing the barn door after the horse have left, and believe you me, the horse is gone"...
