About 1.2 million people die each year in traffic accidents worldwide and more than 90% are caused by driver error.
eric roberts's insight:
Staggering statistics 1.2 million people killed on the worlds roads each year?
I am still not convinced though that these cars will change things, and could even add to the chaos.
The thing is though if you had told that a small machine was coming out in the future, that could take exactly to your destination, then i would have laughed at you. Now most cars have some sort of SAT Nav device when thy embark on a journey?
Watch this space you never know i may have a car that will take me to the office while i am reading the news paper?
You know what a pain those plastic engine covers are? How they get in the way and hide your own car’s engine from you? Well, consider that black piece of molded plastic a metaphor for something much worse: the Digital Millennium Copyright Act.
eric roberts's insight:
This is a very interesting article that centres around the American car industry wanting to make it against the law, for any third party, to be able to log in and adjust any of the cars settings.
I presume this also means the auto after market industry, of which i am a member.
I think that this is also a more sinister move to protect the car makers from the aftermarket servicing and repairing the new technology battery and hydrogen driven cars, in the future.
If this ever took affect then the aftermarket companies could be carrying out work illegally, even something as basic as altering the wheel and tyre size on a car can affect the cars ECU’s ability to calculate the cars speed and make any necessary adjustments to the settings; and a car maker could decide that’s tampering with the inputs to the ECU .
This is due to "Digital Millennium Copyright Act"
Maybe that’s a slight exaggeration, but perhaps not — this law if came out could make things like this possible.
In later statement car makers claim that this only applies to the guy who wants to attend to his own car, and not the repair garage industry
I do believe though the car makers are claiming that the car ECU code belongs to them? and you should not access this to carry out any alterations.
Looking online in the USA and Europe there are millions of companies offering the adjustment of your ECU and re-mapping for better fuel economy or a faster car, i just wonder how the car makers could police such a move?
