The regatta has come and gone, bringing with it some of the best sailors in the world, as well as a few thousand diehard fans. But who won? A tie-breaker decided the champion in the highly-competitive one-design Melges 32 class. In the end, it was Puerto Rico s Sergio Sagramoso s Lazy Dog that triumphed over fellow islander Luis Juarbe s SOCA by earning the most first-place finishes. It was a great weekend for boating all around, and a nice reminder that there is more than one way to cruise the seas around St. Thomas. Many of the boats competing were basically thoroughbreds, built for speed and sculpted like airfoils. It’s beautiful technology, but it’s not for everyone. Our fleet of St. Thomas rental boats are closer to Clydesdales, decked out for luxury, power, pomp and circumstance. Maybe that’s why so many people call our boats the most enjoyable in the U.S. Virgin Islands. Want to ride the waves around St. Thomas at a more leisurely pace, complete with superior amenities a

We had such a great time with this weekend’s charter groups. One group was visiting for a wedding and they were looking for pure pre-wedding day fun. They spent the day bar hopping, relaxing, catching a tan and cruising around listening to our awesome sound system. Here they are below doing a shotski at the Willy T right off of Norman Island and lounging in the water at Sandy Spit. Hopefully they had some energy left for the wedding celebrations… The other group was a family looking for adventure and snorkeling. We took them to one of our favorite and not very well known snorkeling spots called Whistling Cay. They also spent part of their day relaxing and swimming around at Sandy Spit. Both groups absolutely loved island hopping around the British Virgin Islands but who wouldn’t?! We love being able to accommodate our guests no matter what they’re looking to do and this weekend was fun-filled with a variety of people and activities.
Recent trips out with Sonic Charters, the VI's best charter boat
We are big into Sunday Funday here. It’s the day everyone is off work and looking for big adventure. Most people’s favorite Sunday adventure is island hopping around the BVI. This past Sunday, we had a group of locals charter the boat for an all out Sunday funday on Sonic Charters. They wanted to check out a few places some of the newcomers had never been so they got an early start and went exploring The Baths in Virgin Gorda. After a few hours of swimming, snorkeling, and climbing they set off for lunch and afternoon cocktails at Pusser’s on Marina Cay. With a few hours of daylight left they decided to cruise over to Sandy Spit and finish up their adventure there before heading back to St. Thomas. We look forward to taking them back out again soon to show them a few of our other favotire spots- the possibilities are endless!
Caneel said, “We have contracted with several of the charter boats which we currently work with on a regular basis.” From what we heard, we're pretty certain that Caneel contracted with a charter boat out of St.
Living on an island that’s thirty square miles severely inhibits the activities you can partake in and locations that you can visit. When a new spot opens it instantly becomes a hot spot. Which is why the B-Line Bar has become the new boating attraction for us local St. Thomians. Located on Little Jost Van Dyke, it’s a short trip from other attractions such as Sandy Spit and is only about ten minutes East of White Bay. The place is simple, yet awesome. There’s an easy access dock for both captains and patrons. You walk up to their bar, start a tab in their book by writing down what you ordered yourself (honors system!), and drink away. What really makes the bar, however, is the fun and games that they provide; corn hole, backgammon, shut the box, mini corn hole (awesome!!), and checkers. B-Line has all of this, while still maintaining that quiet local feel. It will never be as crowded as White Bay gets, but that’s what gives it that Caribbean feel! The drinks are unique and creative, the bar is simple, the people are local, but holy crap, the view from that beach is incomprehensible. There’s so much to take in, you don’t know what to focus on. If you want a real feel for the quiet Caribbean lifestyle, then this needs to be your destination. I still have a hard time really comprehending what makes these boat days so much fun. My parents just finished their visit from New York after being here for a week. I took the folks on the “Whalen Whirlwind Tour 2014 Spring Break with Parents” where we did everything from Taco Tuesday at the house, to traveling …
It’s about the people… “It’s not what experiences you’ve had but who you’ve had those experiences with.”- Dan Whalen If you haven’t looked who is the author of this blog, take a quick glance. Yup, same name as the quote. You’re damn right I started this blog by quoting myself. I was going to put some thoughtful or introspective quote from some famous philosopher or author, but I didn’t feel it would be fitting for writing about my experiences chartering boats in the US Virgin Islands. Walt Whitman’s quotes were too earthy and I thought it too cheesy to start off with “Two wakes diverged into a yellow sun…” blah, blah, blah, painkiller. Instead, you are left with my quote that I actually think can be referenced throughout my life, especially for an introductory blog with Sonic Charters St Thomas Boat Rental. Let me give you a quick backstory on why I am actually typing in the first place and how I got to St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands. I graduated from SUNY Cortland in New York with a Physical Education degree (I’m sure you could you tell by now that I wasn’t an English major, but if you want a Frisbee thrown into a basketball hoop from 75 feet away? I’m your man…seriously I have video evidence.) I was job hunting in the black hole of the New York State education system when my brother, living in the Virgin Islands, sent me a link with a job opening at a private school on island. I applied, sent my resume, obviously crushed the interview and badda bing, badda boom fuggetaboutit howyadoin, I got the job. Cut ahead four months to me meeting a shirtless …
Great guest blog about St Thomas and St John boat rentals by our very own Dan Whalen.
A perfect St. John boat rental should come without sacrifices. You want the right crew on the right boat at the right price, period. Here are a few ways you can get everything you desire in a hurry: 1. Look for Experience All of us in St. John and the surrounding islands live on or near the water, and most people have at least a passing familiarity with the art of sailing. But real experience is an invaluable thing; it can mean the difference between a smooth ride and a choppy one, and it can help ensure you make it to every destination in a day. Great boat captains know the area. They understand their boats, and offer outstanding advice and guidance no matter what you want to do – snorkeling, diving, even just lounging. So read those bios and stick with the pros. 2. Rental Boats Matter Not every boat in St. John is created equal. Although you see many of the same sizes when you comparison shop, drill down into the details and some important differences emerge. The best rental boats

The Hastings family of 7 joined us for the day to escape from the crazy hustle and bustle of the cruise ship crowds and had “the best day of their vacation!” They stayed in the USVI, which has so many wonderful things to offer. The 3 young girls spent most of their time snorkeling and looking for sealife. They adopted captain Tony as “Uncle Tony” for the day. With the help of Uncle Tony, they saw some pretty amazing creatures! They swam with a big seaturtle, 2 sting rays, tons of colorful fish and Tony even found a starfish to show them which was the day’s goal of one of the girls. At the end of the day, the girls decided that Uncle Tony was the best boat captain around and that this was their kind of place. They can’t wait to visit again and maybe even move here and work for Sonic Charters and Uncle Tony one day. Thank you, Hastings family!!
... island in addition to St .John's? We love to shore snorkel. Are there any pretty calm areas we should check out? Any easy nature walks or trails? I don't think we will rent a car. Any nice driving tours to take or boat tours?
