Our interactive map offers an overview of the mass surveillance industry revealed today by OWNI and Wikileaks, an industry that’s now worth $5 billion a year.
*Just goes to show how professional cyberwar kicks the ass of self-educated gangs of no-budget Wikileaks types. Too bad they found out about it somehow.

The most salient leak in the WikiLeaks cache so far appears to be one discovered by WikiLeaks’ French media partner OWNI, which uncovered a screenshot from a manual created by the French surveillance firm Amesys that shows the e-mail addresses and online pseudonyms of at least 40 people — poets, journalists, writers, historians and intellectuals — who played key roles among Libya’s opposition groups and were evidently being spied on with Amesys technology.
Until recently, seven of them were still living in exile: four in the UK, two in the US, one in Helsinki. Last August, one of them was appointed the Libyan ambassador in London. Another was one of 15 founding members of the National Transitional Council (NTC), created in March 2011 to coordinate the insurgency in Libya. He has since been appointed Minister for Culture.
While they were living in Britain and the United States, the electronic correspondence of all these figures was spied on by the extensive monitoring systems of Amesys, a French electronic warfare arms dealer which forms part of the Bull group.
Asked about their surveillance assistance to the dictatorial regime, Amesys told OWNI, “Amesys is a manufacturer of equipment. The use of the equipment it sells is exclusively the responsibility of its clients. Amesys has never had access to the use made of the equipment it sold to Libya.”
"According to WikiLeaks, the Czech company Phonexia is among the private-sector companies selling the invasive technology — including, in some cases, to dictators."
"Owni, a, a French media group that partnered with The Hindu in the WikiLeaks-Spy Files investigation, succeeded in using electronic means to recover the data."
"Wikileaks released 287 documents on Thursday, which appeared to be mainly brochures and marketing documents related to surveillance equipment. However, Owni, the French media outlet working with WikiLeaks, revealed a page of a manual from Amesys, the French surveillance company, which apparently showed the pseudonyms of 40 tracked figures. Owni claimed that these pseudonyms corresponded to political dissidents that Libyan dictator Muammar Qaddafi had sought to jail or kill."

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange launched the website's new project on Thursday, the publication of files it claims shows a global industry that gives dictatorships tools to spy on their citizens. ...
If you're a wealthy, militant despot of a nation and your sovereignty is slipping away, Wikileaks has discovered that you can attempt to prevent an uprising by hiring a network of spies who operate in the private sector and will keep tabs...

Wikileaks today released a database of tech providers that are involved in government tracking around the globe and quite a few familiar names are on the list, including Alcatel Lucent, Nokia and Cisco. Called The Spy Files , the project includes 287 records gathered and curated in conjunction with several newspapers, Working with Bugged Planet and Privacy International, as well as media organizations from six countries including the Washington Post in the U.S. While the tone of the essay accompanying the release is designed to inspire fear, the accumulation of product brochures, manuals and presentations are pretty damning.

"President Eisenhower, in his 1961 farewell address, warned that the military-industrial complex could "endanger our liberties or democratic processes." Today WikiLeaks editor Julian Assange is warning that the surveillance-industrial complex is even more dangerous."
"Le site Owni déclare avoir répertorié 124 marchands d’armes de surveillance qui, comme les marchands d’armes « traditionnels », se trouvent en très large majorité dans les pays riches et démocratiques : Etats-Unis (32), Royaume-Uni (17), Allemagne (15), Israël (10), France (8), Italie (7)…"
"Today we release over 287 files documenting the reality of the international mass surveillance industry -- an industry which now sells equipment to dictators and democracies alike in order to intercept entire populations," Assange told reporters in London.
There's a lot more to the global private intelligence industry than meets the eye...

"There are no rules to stop a company in a democratic country selling such software to a dictator," said Jean Marc Manach of OWNI, one of the media groups that worked with Wikileaks, speaking at the release event today. "This has to stop."
"Les courriels de sept opposants libyens en exil, résidant au Royaume-Uni ou aux États-Unis, ont été espionnés dans ces pays, par un système d'interception et de surveillance vendus à la Libye de Kadhafi par une société française, révèle jeudi le site Owni.fr."
"It had already been revealed that the electronics firm, Amesys, had worked with the Libyan regime — and French rights groups are attempting to take the group to court — but Owni’s files will prove embarrassing."
These documents released Thursday include monitoring manuals sold in the past authoritarian regimes in the Arab world like Syria, Libya, Tunisia and Egypt. Meanwhile, in Paris, the site Owni.fr unveiled in partnership with nearly 1100 WikiLeaks documents from manufacturers that a French company, Amesys, which does business with the regime of the former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi.

Rondsluipen of afluisterapparatuur plaatsen?
