At the moment, 20 percent of Spotify’s users subscribe to Spotify’s premium service. That’s around six million people paying $10 a month, or $120 a year, for music, and represents the vast majority of Spotify’s income.

Keegan Knutson's insight:

This is the website i chose to do my pros and cons for. I think it has the most information as far as why spotify may be doing this but I think it is definately lacking any citation or credibility

Pros- With spotify bringing the ability to stream their desired music for free with ads, this will bring people to spotify as their first choice over free radio such as pandora and itunes with ads as well. This hopefully for them will make people want the service without the ads.

Cons- I think a lot of people are not going to be to concerned about the advertising and will download the application and never pay for a membership and there may be an upturn in people cancelling their subscriptions.

Keegan Knutson's insight:

This website does a very good job at emphasizing how Spotify is not giving all there services out without paying. It explains well some of the drawbacks, adds, and limited amount of plays included in using the free version over the payed version.

This site does well at briefly describing the basics of the situation. I like how it sites its sources within the article like wall street journal to prove its validity. The pictures of streaming spotify are also nice.
