There are so many technologies available for today's swim coaches.

Lys Newcombe's curator insight, May 5, 2013 8:02 AM

It's obvious that nowadays, sport is roughly just much about athletic performance as it is about the science behind the performance. Howes and Coco (2010) reminds us that without technology in sport, we wouldn't have things like "instant replay, the headset for coaches to throw, or even the wireless microphone for our referees to mix up their words on". But technology in sport is much more than ‘for the viewers benefit’. The area of sports science is becoming increasingly prevalent in modern sport, from Figure Skating to Formula 1, Equestrian to Football, and every sport in between. “Sports Science is a broad field of study that includes training modalities for improved performance; development of methods that allow athletes to train at higher intensities, more efficiently, and without injury; and the development of equipment or gear that improves performance” (Kudma, 2011).

It is the area of technology in sport that brings me to this next topic: Sports Science, with a particular focus on the sport of swimming. Read the article, watch the YouTube video at the end of the page, and respond to the 2 questions in my second scoop. Good luck!

Do you think using technology in swimming training is a useful tool? Explain your answer.

Of the five kinds of technologies/gadgets listed in this blog, which one do you think is the most beneficial for swimmers and why?
