My head was somewhere else and not in the game that night. It was just footy.  I don't know what it was. It was the heat of the moment and I got upset.  Everyone gets upset in games, it's just how you react to it. My reaction was  pretty poor after it,'' Yarran recalled.

YEAR 12 SPORT PSYCHOLOGY - COACHING A TEAM - TEAM DYNAMICS - KNOWING AND MANAGING DIFFERENT PERSONALITIES

Under Malthouse, Yarran says he has worked to become more assertive at the  club, although speaking up in front of teammates is not entirely his strong  suit.

''I just don't think that's me as a person. I like to keep things in-house  and just go about my business quietly. Some people talk in front of other people  better than others,'' he said.

''I was very shy growing up as a kid. If you ask anyone at Carlton, I have  come out of my comfort zone, I have taken little steps, but I won't be one of  those Jonathan Brown types, or Luke Hodge.

''The vocal side is just not for me. I can contribute leadership on the  field. Once I am up and going and injury free, I can do that aspect.''

Parents Ruin Sports for Their Kids by Obsessing About Winning

Parents Ruin Sports for Their Kids by Obsessing About Winning | Sports Magazine: Queen, L. | Scoop.it
Being on a team teaches children teamwork, sacrifice, and other great lessons—which can all be negated if adults are too focused on the score.

lana queen's insight:

Winning has become a huge focus in sports and has begun to take away what the game is truly about. A lot of this emphasis to win comes from the parents in the stands who are cheering on their child. It is important for coaches and parents to remind themselves of what playing a sport is really about so that they can make sure they are emphasizing the right things to their kids.
