Freaked-out Kids in Sports: Keys to Stress Reduction

Freaked-out Kids in Sports: Keys to Stress Reduction | Sports Magazine: Bieszczad, S | Scoop.it
The value of coach+parent education in combating sport-performance anxiety
Sarah Bieszczad's insight:

A different take on the pyschology of sports but now regarding children.  This article discusses how parents may be putting a dangerous amount of pressure on their children as athletes.  Research has shown the two most common reasons are because the parents want their child to experience the success they themsleves never experienced OR the parent was a star at a younger age and they are rejecting their child because he or she can not attain the same level of achievement.

This makes me realize that parents play a huge role of leader in the child's sports.  Many parents need to become more educated about certain implications that may occur if they put too much pressure on their child.

An InsidersHealth.com article regarding men's health - Sports MENtality: Bridging the Game-Day Gender Gap by Kimberly Walleston.
Sarah Bieszczad's insight:

Interesting read about the differences between men and women "superfans." Men and womean are biologically and Emotionally wired different.  It is interesting to notice that men, often more action oriented" people, view the opponent of their favorite sports team as the enmey.  This natural camaraderie is peculiar.  It is also interesting that women have been caught feeling guilt for the opponent missing the game winning shot or touchdown.

Tim Tebow shows that in sports, there’s no faking leadership (and Bruce Boudreau and Randy Edsall could take note)

Tim Tebow shows that in sports, there’s no faking leadership (and Bruce Boudreau and Randy Edsall could take note) | Sports Magazine: Bieszczad, S | Scoop.it
In a real crisis, like say if an asteroid threatens to strike the planet, I want Tim Tebow as my leader. I don’t want University of Maryland football coach Randy Edsall, with his faux-militaristic...
Sarah Bieszczad's insight:

"It's not about domination, it's about persuasion" What makes a person a leader is when other people look up to you as a leader. I think this article is an important one because it proves that you dont have to be a coach or a person of authority to be a leader.  You need to be someone who has confidence in knowing the right thing to do and is not afraid to go against the grain. Tebow strongly exemplifies this.

Murphy: Sports psychology grows at collegiate level

Murphy: Sports psychology grows at collegiate level | Sports Magazine: Bieszczad, S | Scoop.it
While sports psychologists have long been common in the pro ranks, there is a growing contingent of college athletes who seek mental skills training.
Sarah Bieszczad's insight:

This was an exciting find that I stumbled across on ESPN.com.  Hey JMU! This article discusses JMU's stride to have a sports Pyschologist on full time.  Many other collegse and universities have also hired sports pyschologists.  The growing understanding of how important the mental side of the game is a sure sign that people are wanting an edge. Speaking as a college athlete myself, it is incredible how the body and mind can become affected by changing factors during competition time.

Athlete’s mental toughness as important as physical strength, say sport psychologists | Feature Stories

Athlete’s mental toughness as important as physical strength, say sport psychologists | Feature Stories | Sports Magazine: Bieszczad, S | Scoop.it
Sarah Bieszczad's insight:

This article immediately grabbed my attention because I am such a big believer in the impact that the mentality of the game can affect your play to a great degree. "Concentration is the ability to think about absolutely nothing when it is absolutely necessary" What powerful words! I think the Mentality of the game is seriously underestimated.

It is fascinating to hear personal stories of how athletes had visualized success before they even stepped on the court, field, track, or pitch.  I also loved the quote by Sam Snead "I figure practice puts brains in your muscles"

Fixing the Leadership Crisis in Sports | TIME.com

Fixing the Leadership Crisis in Sports | TIME.com | Sports Magazine: Bieszczad, S | Scoop.it
Cover-ups. Bribery scandals. Lockouts. Sports will always produce great leaders. But right now, there are too many bad ones
Sarah Bieszczad's insight:

The two most popular leagues, the NBA and the NFL, have faced some problems regarding leadership.  I think that once you start caring more about the win and less about the moral aptitude of the players and coaches, it will only be downhill from that point on.  It is understandable the coaches get paid to win but if they concentrate more on the shaping of the athletes mentality of the game, we could face less impeding problems in the future.
