Anquan Boldin has been third-down star

Farzin Vousoughian's insight:

I decided to start Anquan Boldin over Doug Baldwin this week. Both players are going up against weak defenses as Boldin faces Tampa Bay and Baldwin will go up against the New York Giants.

My deciding factor in picking Boldin, other than that he is the 17th best fantasy receiver whereas Baldwin is 36th, is that Boldin has Colin Kaepernick who targets Boldin a lot. Russell Wilson likes to distribute the ball among his pass-catchers in Seattle.

The 49ers will rely on Boldin against the Buccaneers, which will benefit the team in trying to use the passing game to win this week.

Chiefs' McCluster (infection) out vs. Raiders

Chiefs wide receiver Dexter McCluster has been ruled out for Sunday's game in Oakland after developing an infection in a small cut on his ankle.
Farzin Vousoughian's insight:

The Kansas City defense co-lead my team in scoring last week and Dexter McCluster had a big hand in that when he took a punt return back for a touchdown. It was his second punt return that went back for a touchdown. The defense scored 27 points.

However, McCluster has an infection on his foot, not related to MRSA, and is out against the Raiders.

This is a big blow for my team because the Raiders have not played well on special teams. This was a great opportunity for McCluster to light it up and possibly carry my team.  Instead, I have to relyon Quintin Demps and Knile Davis, who both recently scored a kick return touchdown, but have limited experience as punt returners.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Jamaal Charles had his explanation for why he's among the league leaders in the fan voting at running back for this year's Pro Bow
Farzin Vousoughian's insight:

Jamaal Charles is not only considered as one of the top running backs in the league, but now, he's one of the best players in the league in the eyes of NFL fans.

Charles is currently fourth in Pro Bowl voting after putting up some big numbers through 12 games. He is second int he league in total yards from scrimmage andthird in rushing.

He is tied fourth in the league in receptions with 55 among all running backs and is tied for the league lead among all running backs in total touchdowns with 11 this year.

Those kinds of stats have really helped pump up my fantasy team, hence a big reason why I lead the league in total points scored this year in the fantasy league.

The Chiefs have limited viable options on offense and are desperate for a win. In order to snap their three-game losing streak, they must rely on Charles to have a big game and will feed him the ball quite a lot against the struggling Redskins.

On the field or off, Panthers' Steve Smith won't back down - Football Wires - MiamiHerald.com | Sports Journalism 585 FFL | Scoop.it
Panthers wide receiver Steve Smith has never been shy about getting in the face of an opponent usually a defensive player who's bigger than he is to make a point.
Farzin Vousoughian's insight:

Steve Smith was considered one of the elite wide receivers in the NFL. While the Panthers have had a good season, Smith has quietly gone unnoticed in 2013. His best game in terms of receiving yards is 69 yards and he has only three touchdowns and 512 yards on the season.

I drafted Smith earlier in the year thinking that I could rack up a lot of points and that Cam Newton would throw to him more. But because of the style of offense Carolina runs, I haven’t had much success.

Why am I keeping Smith as a starter on my team?

Smith has proved that he can light it up and he is probably due to have a good game at some point really soon.

Drew Brees threw a pair of touchdown passes and the New Orleans Saints overcame a lackluster offensive showing, holding off the Atlanta Falcons 17-13 Thursday night.
Farzin Vousoughian's insight:

After trailing early on the road, Saints tight end Jimmy Graham played a big hand in lifting the Saints over the Falcons in Thursday's win. Drew Brees connected with Graham five times for 100 yards and a touchdown, earning me 16 points.

Graham continues to have his monstor season and has helped my team immensly as I have a big lead over my opponent after Thursday Night Football.

Farzin Vousoughian's insight:

It is nice having the No. 1 running back and No. 1 defense on my team, but having the No. 1 tight end, Jimmy Graham, has helped my team quite a lot. So much so, that the Dallas Cowboys don’t consider him an ordinary tight end.

The positive side for Dallas, bad for my team, is that it will have DeMarcus Ware back on defense this week. Drew Brees must have a quick release to get the ball in the Graham’s hands.

Farzin Vousoughian's insight:

LeGarrette Blount, one of my starting running backs this week, is starting to be considered more of a No. 2 option as Doug Kyed pointed out that Stevan Ridley is a far better option than Blount.

Luckily I have Charles, but not a whole lot to work with.

Now that Blount is shifting into a backup role, I shouldn’t expect him to gather a lot of points this week for my team. The best situation is to hope that moving into a backup role ignites a fire underneath him and makes him want to perform better, translating into more touches and opportunities in goal-line situations.

Farzin Vousoughian's insight:

Mike Triplett of ESPN.com does a fantastic job of breaking down Geno Smith from New Orleans’ perspective. Saints coach Sean Payton addresses what he sees on Smith as does rookie safety Kenny Vaccaro, who faced Smith once in college last year.

Since Matthew Stafford and the Lions are on a bye week, I have to settle with Smith this week. Smith and the Jets have been inconsistent while the Saints have been pretty good defensively. I’m a little concerned about my quarterback play this week.

NY Jets tight end Jeff Cumberland is heard, loud and clear | Sports Journalism 585 FFL | Scoop.it
Jeff Cumberland didn’t have a master plan on that Monday afternoon three weeks ago. He didn’t rehearse his lines. He wasn’t nervous.
Farzin Vousoughian's insight:

Jeff Cumberland is on pace to have the best season he's had since being in the NFL in 2010. Since Jimmy Graham and the Saints are on a bye, I picked up Cumberland and made him my replacement tight end for the week. Geno Smith has played well and has thrown to Cumberland a lot this year.

With the way Cumberland has taken over as a leader, this makes him a key player for the Jets offense and Smith will likely throw to him more as the season goes on.

They face a Patriots defense that hasn't been perfect, which means there is a chance for Cumberland to find success and give me some points during Graham's absence.

The wows and woes of NY Giants receiver Rueben Randle

The wows and woes of NY Giants receiver Rueben Randle | Sports Journalism 585 FFL | Scoop.it
Rueben Randle has the talent to maybe someday be the Giants’ No. 1 receiver. He also has a ways to go before he’s ready for that role.
Farzin Vousoughian's insight:

Ever since I moved Ruben Randle to my bench, he scored 22 points last week and 13 points this past Thursday. He's been more productive than Steve Smith, who I started over Randle.

The Giants have been awful this year, but Eli Manning seems to find success when he gets the football to Randle's hands. I'm not sure why Randle has been able to step up, but he's found a way to get going. At this rate, it is in my best interest to pull Smith out and switch Randle back as a starter.

But with my luck, Randle might stop playing well and Smith will probably begin to dominate.

Chiefs’ Justin Houston practices but Brandon Flowers hurts knee - KansasCity.com

Chiefs’ Justin Houston practices but Brandon Flowers hurts knee - KansasCity.com | Sports Journalism 585 FFL | Scoop.it
Chiefs outside linebacker Justin Houston was a full participant in Friday’s practice and is probable for Sunday’s game against Oakland but cornerback Brandon Flowers hurt his left knee in practice and is questionable for Sunday.
Farzin Vousoughian's insight:

The Kansas City Star reports that the Chiefs are dealing with multiple injuries, some more serious than others. Justin Houston had a neck injury, but appears that he will play. Brandon Flowers, however, missed practice due to a knee injury and his status for this Sunday is uncertain.

In the end, I'd rather lose Flowers than Houston. The Chiefs defense is ranked No. 1 in fantasy football and the Chiefs had a good game against the New York Giants when Flowers was out. Houston has more value than Flowers does. Houston's ability to get sacks and create ill-advised passes is a big reason why the defense has scored so many points.

In the end, losing Flowers instead of Houston is fine.

Drew Brees remembers seeing Jimmy Graham on a practice field for the first time. It was spring 2010 and the Saints quarterback knew the team's diamond-in-the-rough third-round pick was intriguing....
Farzin Vousoughian's insight:

Perhaps the best player on my fantasy football team is Jimmy Graham, who shined on Monday Night Football last week when he caught two touchdowns. He's caught at least a touchdown in every game this year and scored a pair of touchdowns in each of the last two games.

Chicago’s defense, which Graham will face next, has been inconsistent this year. With Drew Brees under center for the Saints, Graham is poised to have another big game this week. Graham, the No. 1 tight end in fantasy football, is one of my keys to winning my fantasy league this week.

Graham has played a big hand in helping me lead the league in total points so far this year.

Lions' Matthew Stafford, Calvin Johnson top this week's fantasy football rankings (with video)

Injuries figure to cause plenty of headaches this week with several top fantasy performers either out or ailing. Even if you’re not able to put your optimal lineup on the field this week, chances are your opponent isn’t either.
Farzin Vousoughian's insight:

Matthew Stafford, my starting quarterback, has done a good job pleasing fantasy football owners this season.

He's completed 66 percent of his throws while passing for four touchdowns and one interception. Half of his touchdowns have been completed to Calvin Johnson, one of the league's top offensive players today.

As the Lions get ready to visit the Washington Redskins, the offense is expected to make a lot of noise with Stafford under center. The Redskins have allowed 35.5 points per game this season and are ranked 23rd against the pass.

This spells a good day for Stafford, who is likely to help my team collect a lot of points this week.

Thomas had four catches for 45 yards Thursday in a 27-20 loss to the Chargers. He was targeted just five times, as he was shadowed with a deep safety for most of the game...
Farzin Vousoughian's insight:

Demaryius Thomas is generally one of Peyton Manning’s top receivers on the team. While Manning has a myriad of options, it appeared Thomas would get more targets with Wes Welker out. But instead, Thomas finished with only four points on Thursday night as Manning found another receiver to throw to.

Andre Caldwell was a pleasant surprise, despite a loss for the Broncos. Caldwell was targeted 10 times and caught two touchdown passes against San Diego.

Throughout Manning’s career, he’s been able to use any receiver or tight end as a viable weapon. He can make some of his backups look like long-time veterans, and he did just that with Caldwell while Thomas had a quiet night.

With one more week left in the fantasy league while I fight for the championship, I’ll need Manning to make Thomas his priority.

Farzin Vousoughian's insight:

Through the first nine games of the NFL season, the Chiefs have dominated opposing teams as they led the league in sacks and takeaways. The Chiefs did not allow more than 17 points in either of the first nine games.

Throughout the past three weeks, Kansas City's defense has been a mess and has been a liability for my fantasy team. The Chiefs have allowed 103 points in the past three games and have been limited in coming up with sacks and takeaways, the team's biggest strength.

Against a Washington team that has been disappointing all season, this is a perfect chacne for the defense to rebound and help me gather a lot of fantasy points as I try to advance in the playoffs.

New Orleans Saints Need to Focus on Feeding Jimmy Graham vs. Panthers

New Orleans Saints Need to Focus on Feeding Jimmy Graham vs. Panthers | Sports Journalism 585 FFL | Scoop.it
The New Orleans Saints are in relatively unfamiliar territory for the 2013 NFL season.
Farzin Vousoughian's insight:

The New Orleans Saints fell flat against the Seattle Seahawks this past Monday night on the road. They only scored one touchdown, and luckily, a touchdown that benefited me as Jimmy Graham hauled in eight points while kicker Garrett Hartley got the extra point for me, just enough to help me tie against Geoffrey in the playoffs this week, in which we will have a rematch this week.

The key to the Saints winning is to keep giving the ball to Graham, easily' the team's biggest weapon. This benefits me, like all season. The Saints need to rely on Graham in order to score and pull away with a win, which will help me pull away with a win as well.

Darrelle Revis and Calvin Johnson will draw the most attention, but other significant battles in Sunday's game in Detroit include Reggie Bush against a Bucs LB corps that is down one man
Farzin Vousoughian's insight:

The Detroit Lions will host a struggling Tampa Bay Buccaneers team, despite recent wins, that is 18th in the league against the pass. On paper, it looks as if my fantasy quarterback, Matthew Stafford, could have a field day with Calvin Johnson. But the Bucs do have Darrelle Revis, who must be accounted for.

Johnson could have a couple of plays in the game, but Stafford might not be able to put up video game-like numbers because Revis will be defending Johnson throughout the game.

Stafford should have a good day and put up some good fantasy points from me. But he probably won't get as much as I'd like because of Revis.

Indianapolis Colts running back Trent Richardson is battling through an ankle injury, which makes Donald Brown an intriguing fantasy football option...
Farzin Vousoughian's insight:

With Trent Richardson suffering an injury, Donald Brown will see plenty of action on the gridiron against the St. Louis Rams. This bodes well for the Colts and Brown as the Rams are 30th in the NFL against the run.

I picked up Brown this week as Jamaal Charles and the Chiefs are on a bye. This could be one of those games where the Rams allow an unknown player have his 15 minutes of fame.

Following Week 10, I will likely cut ties with Brown since it is likely Richardson could return soon, and it is doubtful that Brown faces a bad rush defense each week.

Dwayne Bowe, Jamaal Charles set to go for Chiefs

Dwayne Bowe, Jamaal Charles set to go for Chiefs | Sports Journalism 585 FFL | Scoop.it
The Chiefs appear to be at full strength offensively for this Sunday’s matchup with the Bills. Running back Jamaal Charles and wide receiver Dwayne Bowe have each been listed as probable for the game after a week of practice affected by injuries.
Farzin Vousoughian's insight:

One of the best piece of encouraging news I got from my team was hearing that Jamaal Charles is set to go for the Chiefs on Sunday, despite a distressed knee.

Charles can be very valuable on a fantasy team for two reasons. For starters, the rest of the Chiefs offense is underperforming this year. And because of the fact that Charles is good, this forces the Chiefs to overuse him. He gets a lot of touches and has at least 100 yards from scrimmage in every game this year. Last week’s game was the only time in which Charles did not have a touchdown.

Some of his best games historically have come against the Bills, so hopefully he can carry my fantasy team this week as I am missing a lot of key starters due to a heavy bye week on my team.

Although the Chiefs defense is starting for me, I have another defense on my bench that could make some noise.

The Baltimore Ravens have not played well this year, and neither have the Pittsburgh Steelers. But the Steelers defense has been stout and can make an impact in giving the team its second win of the season.

Farzin Vousoughian's insight:

When Brandon Jacobs came out of retirement and returned to the Giants, I took a risk and signed him to my fantasy football team and started him right away. I did this because New York had a poor group of running backs and I figured it would give Jacobs the ball right away. I thought it would have been an innocuous move, but I was wrong.

Jacobs has 11 carries for 11 yards and a touchdown. Now, the New York Daily News reports that he will be part of a one-two punch in New York. But how good is he expected to be? Considering New York’s awful luck, I decided to bench Jacobs. Not only is Jacobs off to a rough start, but he’s the No. 2 running back, so he won’t get the ball as much.

There is no reason to start a player if he is a backup and is expected to be very limited on carries. Bad move on my part picking him up.
