If you know where to look, you can find plenty of jobs within a team's organization.  Heading up concessions job in a stadium is an important position as it will be the basis for how good or bad the quality of concessions a team sells.

This journal described the reasons why crowd management needs to be in place at large crowds at sporting venues such as the Olympics, NBA playoff games and the Super Bowl. Four reasons were mentioned in the journal. Crowd management is there for the patron's safety and so the sporting venue can operate smoothly, you need to have security so the patron's do not get out of hand from drinking excessively which can cause people to start fighting.

When we think of creating a sports facility and being either a manager or owner we have to remember it can also be a dangerous place. Meaning incidents happen and lawsuits get filed, so as an owner or manager we have to always remember to have insurance as well as proper risk management plans to protect against t lawsuits and avoid incidents.

Jack Botham's curator insight, August 27, 2015 10:04 AM

This article demonstrates the importance of having a risk management plan in place. Constant audits and inspections are mandatory to avoid serious injury or a potential fatality. It is important for builders to perform inspections not only keep people safe, but also to maintain their own legal obligations. Building inspections further ensure that structures and equipment on site, such as scaffolds, are in good working order to prevent a court case similar to the one in this article. A case like this could result in a builder being forced out of business due to financial penalty. A fatality on a site could result in the builder being sent to prison due to legislation breach.

This article in my opinion picks up on the facts of why not just recreation centers should have a risk management plan, but it coincides with any type of facility that will keep from having lawsuits or any issues.

Shawn J Minyon's curator insight, February 19, 2015 12:10 AM

Security of the sports facility is a top concern as a facility manager.  From large scale stadiums to local town recreation centers ensuring the safety of the spectators to the employees it is paramount that they are safe.  Giving the customers the feeling they are safe is also very important to having them come back.  In todays society terrorism is a threat around the world.  Large crowds are a prime target for terrorists and vigilant good security measures must be in place at all times.  Even on a smaller scale large crowds bring in petty thief's such as pick pockets or people selling illegal goods.  Even giving people the feeling that their vehicles are protected from theft or being broke into can help ease the worries of the fans and employees.  S.A.F.E. is one example of a security service that can aid in increasing security measures.  There are many security agencies out there that can provide the same services to meet specific needs of a particular facility.  This is an important part of managing a facility so don't underplay or under estimate the critical need for good security.

John Mayfield's curator insight, October 5, 2015 10:20 PM

This isn't a true article but it does show you what they do provide in security and what they do to help events run properly.  It also gives you the chance to apply for jobs and internships that could help kick start a career in security

The number of US emergency department visits for 14 to 19 year olds due to concussions has tripled from 1997 to 2007... between 30 and 58 percent were sports related, (Merkel, D., Molony, J.T., 2012).  "Sports and injuries are inseparable, every athletics program needs a solid medical emergency protocol".
