How To Respond To Criticism (Part 1: Verbal Aikido) | Sports Ethics: Hester, C | Scoop.it

“What a stupid idea!” your colleague bursts out. “It will never work.”

How can you respond?

Say, “You are wrong,” and you escalate the conflict.

Say, “I am wrong,” and you betray yourself.

Your colleague must have not read my previous post about humility. Or if he did, he must have been the one who commented that it was a stupid article.

Here are a several ways to deal with criticism.

We Tried This: Strong vs. Skinny

We Tried This: Strong vs. Skinny | Sports Ethics: Hester, C | Scoop.it
The weight room can feel like a boys club but more women are reporting to weight training classes and high-intensity boot camps.

Earlier this week, the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) released their survey resultsof popular fitness trends of 2013, and strength and body weight training topped the list for men and women. Missing from the list were Pilates and spinning classes, which were favorites in previous years. So are more women taking to barbells? Is ‘bulking up’ no longer considered so bad?

The Most Trusted - and the Least Trusted Professions

The Most Trusted - and the Least Trusted Professions | Sports Ethics: Hester, C | Scoop.it

Australians have just been asked which professions they consider the most ethical and honest.

You guessed it: car salesmen are at the bottom of the list. They have held that position for more than 30 years. Scraping along the bottom with them are advertisers, real estate agents and state MPs.

The latest Roy Morgan "Image of Professions" survey asked respondents to rate or score people in various occupations for honesty and ethical standards.

And the results confirm our favourite prejudices.

Is Your Injury Caused by Pace or Distance?

Is Your Injury Caused by Pace or Distance? | Sports Ethics: Hester, C | Scoop.it

Study categorizes the most likely contributor to common running injuries.

When many runners ramp up their training, such as when pointing toward a marathon, they increase mileage and intensity simultaneously. This study suggests that if you have knee problems while doing so, you may have upped your mileage too quickly. Conversely, if your knees are fine but your calf, Achilles or plantar fascia start hurting, your body may be okay with your mileage increase, but isn't yet ready to handle the increased intensity.
