Spurs’ Leonard relishes responsibility of carrying heavy load

Spurs’ Leonard relishes responsibility of carrying heavy load | Sports and Performance Psychology | Scoop.it

NEW ORLEANS — Kawhi Leonard often looks spent after Spurs games. Slumped in a seat in front of his locker with his knees wrapped in ice, he silently eyes the stat sheet before mustering the energy to hoist his 6-foot-7, 225-pound frame upright for the trudge to the showers. At the offensive end, I guess our players get less minutes than other players at that position, so I don’t think he’s ever going to be worn out. … Fortunately for the Spurs, they’ve never been shortchanged by Leonard, who will make his second-straight start for the West in Sunday’s NBA All-Star Game.

Not all athletes have a clear mind, a lot join a sport because it helps with deeper mental issues. The sport gives them discipline and allows them to mask the issue and learn to live with it a little better. You may not be able to completely get rid of the problem but it helps decrease it.

Matthew Bales's curator insight, April 9, 10:39 PM

The body and mind are connected and superior performance can be reached when both are geared correctly.

Athletes and many other people are always monitoring heartrate, steps, you name it, but what if you could monitor mental activity? These headphone allow you to listen to music but it is also monitoring your brain activity as you listen. When you start to lose that focus the volume turns down so you focus on what is causing you to lose focus. You can minimize and learn where those distractions come from.

This is by far my favorite article. It is a must read! It brings to light fairly new technology called EEG training.

EEG sensors collect brain waves, which the software on the iPhone records. When it is finished, the app instantly gives an EEG assessment.

On the iPhone, this appears as a bar graph breaking down six categories: activation baseline, focus capacity, impulse control, focus endurance, max activation, and stress regulation. It shows the areas in which an individual needs work. Perhaps an individual had trouble focuses the software then has training exercises to work on improving one's focus. It is a lengthy article, but very informative and for someone like me who has difficulty focuses (I'm a day dreamer), I was interested the whole time!
