Run For Your Life: Spartathlon 2014 Race Report - I Want to Break Free | Sports Activities | Scoop.it

An ultra-long report of an ultra-tough race like Spartathlon. One of the best reports I have read!

Jason Gonsalves's curator insight, October 14, 3:09 PM

I learned that this race is very taxing on ones physicality and physical ability to succeed. It is very interesting to learn about races such as the Spartathlon because you get to see the levels of competition that the worlds best runners compete at.

This articles title was very appealing to me. When you think of "Sparta" some people think of the obvious movie 300. While others will realize that a Spartan is a tough, physical, and competitive warrior. This appeals to the race's audience because it shows that only real competitors can survive the race. I selected the article because I wanted to read about the competition that this race provides.

This is an interesting race because this particular race will put you in very desolate environmental conditions and it will test you not only physically but definitely mentally. I find it very interesting that people actually put weights in their bags to test themselves in such an enduring race such as this, it is very interesting to see who takes these types of competitions seriously by making it harder for yourself.

I believe that this will help me in the sports management field of event planning. I believe this because it is always important to come up with the 'next big thing' in sports. This race seems like it could draw a lot of attention globally, and attract a wide range of audiences.

Jason Gonsalves's curator insight, October 14, 4:01 PM

I chose this article because as an athlete I am always curious to see how different types of training methods would benefit different athletes, of different sports.

I found it interesting that it is beneficial for runners to actually add weight. I always knew that it was important for runners to add weight to their frames, but it was always my belief that it was ideal for them to keep slim, making them naturally lighter which would give them less weight to carry.

I learned that it is always beneficial to try new training methods as long as you stay safe and they can help contribute to your performance in a sport.

This information will help me because it teaches me to cater to different sporting events and that different athletes would be interested in doing things that other athletes would do, such as P90X and Cross-fit.

Nick Berno's curator insight, October 14, 9:20 PM

What I learned in this article was if strength training is beneficial towards runners. They tested runners between the ages of 21 and 45 by having some do explosive training and some doing maximal strength training while others just ran three to four times a week. I picked this article because it connects to Sport Management in the fact that it is close to demographics. They are testing on a specific target market to figure it out if all runners should do this.

Brian A Corcoran's curator insight, October 14, 11:55 PM

1. I learned that runners are not supposed to have long intense workouts during the week; that they should stick to running and smaller light workouts. Also that strength training decreased runners maximum speeds, their jump height, muscle activation etc. Runners need to stick to there pace in running and light workouts so they are still able to run after each workout.

2. I found how hardcore strength training will decrease your maximum speed and muscle activation interesting. You would think that working out intensely would build up your speed. Long distance runners must stick to their running and short workouts to keep the same pace.

3. I selected this article because the title grabbed my attention and it involved staying fit, which is what i like to do. I found this article interesting and was always keeping me interested as i began to read it.

4. This information will help me in the sport management industry because it gave runners advice on what not to do for your workouts

I wonder if the touch screen is going to reduce even more than hectic battery life of the 3+ Black edition. That is a serious limitation for me. 1hr is already quite short battery life.
