Youth sports as a development zone: Jim Thompson at TEDxFargo

Jim Thompson is founder of Positive Coaching Alliance, a nonprofit dedicated to using sports to develop Better Athletes, Better People. An Ashoka Fellow, Jim...
Sarah Hulsman's insight:

Jim Thompson in this video talks about a movement in youth sports known as the development zone which has a mission of developing better athletes and better people. Coaches are challenged to be a double goal coach (win and life coach), and athletes are challenged to be triple athletes (self, teammate, game). Development zone can be considered a type of organizational culture. Organizational culture focuses on core values and beliefs. A strong sport diplomacy program will need to know exactly what they value and believe in order to have a successful program.

Bonita Mersiades calls for more women in sport leadership roles | Sport Management: Hulsman, S | Scoop.it
ONE of Australia's most respected sporting administrators says federal Opposition Leader Tony Abbott is a "pussycat" compared with the men who run world football.
Sarah Hulsman's insight:

Bonita Mersiades believes that it is time for more women to be granted higher positions within sport administration world in Australia. She believes that once women attain these positions then they will be able to share their experiences with other women which will then help create an equal playing field for women in sport. This article touches on topics such as the lack of fit theory, gender bias (many believe that males are more suitable for jobs in the sport industry), and diversity within the workplace. One of the main tenents of sport diplomacy is using sport to empower women in countries where women have no power at all. Although in Australia women do have power they are still striving to create equal opportunity through sport.

A retrospective analysis of leadership development through sport

A retrospective analysis of leadership development through sport | Sport Management: Hulsman, S | Scoop.it
Sarah Hulsman's insight:

This journal explored how sport can be used to develop certain leadership skills such as strong work ethic, and cognitive knowledge. The journal also reviewed sources that encouraged development such as peers, coaches, and parents. A large portion of the article reviewed the importance of coaching which is one of the tenents of development in sport organizations. The coach was identified as a guide to help achieve certain goals. Once again when it comes to my future career a huge emphasis will be put on what can sport teach others or help individuals learn about themselves.

Athletes get leadership lesson at Genesys Athletic Club's annual mentoring program in Grand Blanc

Athletes get leadership lesson at Genesys Athletic Club's annual mentoring program in Grand Blanc | Sport Management: Hulsman, S | Scoop.it
More than 150 student athletes from 17 local high schools participated in the annual Leadership Mentoring program sponsored by GAC in conjunction with the Greater Flint Sports Hall of Fame.
Sarah Hulsman's insight:

Recently in Flint Michigan a mentoring summit was put on the GAC. Current coaches in the area who have been successful mentored the high school student athletes on what it takes to be a leader while playing a sport. The summit that is talked about in this article is considered a type of leadership development known as external programming. It is put on by a governing body in order to enhance and develop the leadership skills of the high school athletes. A core characteristic of sport diplomacy is development of the individual via sport. As someone working in sport diplomacy I would be challenged to help others discover their potential through leadership development programming.

Sarah Hulsman's insight:

The US Departent of State has created a program in which cross cultural connections are made via sports. These connections are made through mentorship programs which are believed to help empower young women. The program embodies the fourth step of mentoring that our textbook identifies which is pairing the mentor and the mentee. According to the book In order to find a mentor mentee fit skills and knowledge must be assessed. That is the role of the espnW committee to pair up mentors and mentees. This video highlights what I would like to do, use sport as an agent for change.

Help is on the way, Pakistan

Help is on the way, Pakistan | Sport Management: Hulsman, S | Scoop.it
My head is spinning and my I’m tearing my hair out. But I’ve never felt so amazing in my life.
Today is my last day at ESPN as part of the Global Sports Mentoring Program, and the experience ha
Sarah Hulsman's insight:

This article highlights the experiences of one of the women, Fatima Saleem, who is a participant in the Global Sports Mentoring Program that is put on by ESPNW and the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. The program brings emerging female sport leaders from across the world to the United States to start up a mentoring relationship with successful US businesswomen. This relates to class because it is a mentoring program. Mentoring programs are used to train and develop future leaders in the industry. Mentoring focuses on relationship building while focusing on the the growth and development of the mentee. This article highlighting the Global Sports Mentoring Program encompasses just about every aspect of what I hope to have in my future career. The program utilizes sports as a way to create cross cultural connections and is a way to empower those who are more then often powerless.

Play Like a Champion Today symposium to address ethics, abuse prevention // News // Notre Dame News // University of Notre Dame | Sport Management: Hulsman, S | Scoop.it
Notre Dame News gathers and disseminates information that enhances understanding of the University’s academic and research mission and its accomplishments as a Catholic institute of higher learning.
Sarah Hulsman's insight:

This article highlights a coach education program entitled Play Like a Champion which occured this past spring at Notre Dame. The focus of the program was to promote ethical awareness to coaches who deal with young athletes. This symposium is considered to be a type of training method to deliever a certain outcome (greater awareness as a youth coach) on a topic that deals with social responsibility. When working in sport diplomacy training will need to be done with volunteers who help out with camps and programs to make sure that they are on the same page as the organization.

Youth sport programs: an avenue to foster positive youth development.

Sarah Hulsman's insight:

A study explored how sport programs have the ability to develop young children positively in the following five ways: physical, social, psychological/emotional, and intellectually. These after school programs were developed in hopes that individuals will steer away from problem behaviors like drugs and violence. This program is invested in social responsibility more specifically community/civic engagement because it is attempting to better the community. Once again working in sport diplomacy would require me to use sport as an agent for social change. Sport is a great way to pick up positive life skills like hard work, dedication, and teamwork without even knowning it.

Sarah Hulsman's insight:

Beat the Street's Philidelphia has created an after school program to mentor urban under privelaged youth. The program is using wrestling to create a connection with their mentor and to develop life skills that will hopefully lead to academic success. This program was created once members of Beat the Streets identified a developmental need which is the second step of mentoring. The program also has a social responsibility focus by striving to create equal opportunities for all. Sport diplomacy is all about identifying developmental needs then using sport as a way to combat the issue.

Mentoring Connections Between Coaches and Female Athletes

Sarah Hulsman's insight:

This journal took a look at how coaching can create mentor/mentee relationships. The author believes that an increase in women mentors will directly lead to an increase of women in leadership positions within sport. Our book also identified mentoring as a way to encourage women to become leaders within sport organizations. Women mentors are viewed as motivation to strive for leadership roles. I believe in the power of female mentoring because it has shaped my life and therefore I want to be able to do the same for others in my future career.

A different lens to view mentoring in sport management.

Sarah Hulsman's insight:

In this article I found an alternative way to view the mentoring relationship in the sport industry. The alternative method is peer mentoring and it occurs when both individuals mutually benefit from the help and advice rather than just one person benefitting, In class we discussed the fact that mentoring is meant to be mutually beneficial rather then only benefitting the mentee. I know that if I were to have a job in sport diplomacy a phrase that I would have to live by is that every person has something to teach you.
