Juliana Loh's insight:

I've worn a few hats in my career and the one that always makes me "pause" with curiousity are questions regarding usability. Yes. UX is different than UI. No. UI artists aren't necessarily UX specialist. Anyway... without further comments, here is a good site that best explains what each of the facets do and how they all comes together to create an optimal user experience.

Juliana Loh's insight:

Ease of use is the order of the day. It's not that you 'can' create stories... the question is 'how' and whether or not your target audience (in this case children) can do it within the realm of their specific capacities. This little platform holds promise. Thanks Karen for highlighting this!

My pleasure Juliana and your points are well taken. I wish I had more time to actually try out each tool I come across. I hope this one works well. I figure if a kid can do it, so can I :) And to your point -- yes, if you know 'how' to craft a compelling story, you will win with this app. So you've got to be a good storyteller first.

7 Deadly Sins of Worldbuilding

7 Deadly Sins of Worldbuilding | "Chasing Cyborgs" -Digital Trends, Tools, Usability & Story-telling Secrets | Scoop.it

Via The Digital Rocking Chair
Juliana Loh's insight:

Having worked on an even smaller RPG project, I've had to build out and consider all aspects of our world both visually and wrt narrative. Responding to situations required designing the society mindset. Without that mindset, we wouldn't have known how to visually represent our world economically, socially aesthetically and politically.

Charlie Jane Anders:  "Worldbuilding is an essential part of any work of fiction. But especially for science fiction or fantasy, it's the lifeblood of storytelling. But when worldbuilding fails, it can wreck your whole story, and leave your characters feeling pointless. Here are seven deadly sins of worldbuilding" ...

Really helpful checklist for the novelist (or screenwriter or playwright).

Henrik Safegaard - Cloneartist's curator insight, August 4, 2013 3:21 AM
1. Not thinking about basic infrastructure.

How do they eat? What do they eat? Who takes away the garbage? Who deals with their bodily wastes? How do they get around? What do the majority of people do to survive? You're not just constructing a society, you're creating an economy. People don't oppress each other for fun — usually, systems of hierarchy and oppression have an economic component to them. Maybe you need a lot of peasants to grow labor-intensive crops, or maybe you need lots of cannon fodder in your space war. Maybe your only source of protein is a weird fungus that needs to be tended by specially trained people. Maybe everybody's eating algae. In any case, there's nothing worse than a fictional world where there are elaborate social structures, which seem completely separated from the realities of food, shelter and clothing.

OpenIDEO is a global community that will draw on your optimism, inspiration, ideas and opinions to solve problems together for the collective social good.
Juliana Loh's insight:

Open IDEO is one of my favourite websites. It starts by asking a BIG QUESTION and invites people to collaborate on ideation, concepting, sharing and then evaluation requirements. The more you participate, the higher your 'stats' and the more able you are to affect the outcome of the problem. Sponsors are invited to choose from among the best ideas if they would like to develop them further.

I think this app might work in a specified location that concentrates particular industries OR it might work in an office building with many departments. Other than that, I agree that using this app on any 'random street' may not be very efficient.
Hans Heesterbeek's comment, July 30, 2013 3:19 PM
Juliana you're right that could work but if you are searching for a jon or a new job you should be aware of the possibility and switch the app on. I think in practice not many of us would do that. On the other hand I also think we must try out every possibility because it brings innovations
Juliana Loh's comment, July 30, 2013 8:47 PM
Hans i think the app works well as a shopping app... ex sales for shoes nearby! I'd be happy about that and I agree with you... not all applications are perfect, but the innovation that drives them is what's most important.

Trending now: Bootstrap for webdesign

Juliana Loh's insight:

What's trending now in webdesign (and has been for the last few months) is the bootstrap website. You know... those one-pager sites that seem to go on and on in some sites. As for the trending color? Yep. It is STILL 'orange'. Infact... "orange is the new black"... why? I don't know but every color seems to have its day in the sun. Considering this is the color of my logo I'm perfectly fine with that. Pair this with some html & css and you too can make your own brief little site. But please... go easy with the scrolling & the parallax :)

It holds that experiences cycle out of an understanding of social pscyhology, business objectives and analysis-based creative output. This feature on Brian Solis advocates what we as experience designers have been supporting for years.

Royal baby betting exceeds £1 million

Royal baby betting exceeds £1 million | "Chasing Cyborgs" -Digital Trends, Tools, Usability & Story-telling Secrets | Scoop.it
Bookmakers across the U.K. are still cashing in on the gambling frenzy that's been sparked by the birth of the royal baby.
Juliana Loh's insight:

We are 'gamers' no matter what. So it comes with no surprise that the 'experience' of Kate and William's birth of their new son invited the perfect opportunity for the world to partake in an age-old ritual - *gambling*.

How does this fit into story-telling? Betting raises the stakes, the interest in the actual climax which of course came last night to the cries of "It's a boy"! To many, the announcement arrived with a simple celebratory 'hooray', but to a whole lot of dealers & betters.. it was truly a moment to be shared *globally*. Afterall, you couldn't really go wrong with 50/50 odds!

Does 'gaming' bring us together ... you bet!!! Next 'game' up? Baby names of course! :D
