We strolled down a sensor-studded smart street

We strolled down a sensor-studded smart street | "Chasing Cyborgs" -Digital Trends, Tools, Usability & Story-telling Secrets | Scoop.it
The smartphone connected high street shopping experience is coming, but the tech has some way to go before it’s ready for prime time.
Juliana Loh's insight:

Beacon technology serves retails by transmitting information to your apps/smartphones. At its best your shopping efforts will be effortless as customized information is served up to your phone. Liking the color blue? a basic size 7 with a love of all things hippy/trendy chic? Yep... you'll get that information along with prices and suggestions. Problem arises when the technology does not work or when the customer is 'spammed' by too many point and sales messages. How do you separate all that info when you're on the hunt for that one "cool" thing? Which apps and pieces of info are more relevant. ex brand sites? retail giants? third party site? These are some of the things that have to be hammered out in a world demanding full customized service.

Why ‘Assistant-As-App’ Might Be the Next Big Tech Trend

Why ‘Assistant-As-App’ Might Be the Next Big Tech Trend | "Chasing Cyborgs" -Digital Trends, Tools, Usability & Story-telling Secrets | Scoop.it
Whenever I feel uncomfortable writing about a topic, that’s when I know I should write about it. So here goes. This article is about how a new way of designing apps changed my life. But to explain the power of this trend, I need to tell you about poop. That’s the uncomfortable part. For the past five years or so, I’ve struggled with intestinal discomfort. (I’ll spare you the gory details.) I spent countless hours crawling the web searching for a possible diagnosis and tried dozens of different remedies and diets. Nothing seemed to help. Finally, I saw a gastroenterologis
Juliana Loh's insight:

FB is developing (or has developed by now )a virtual online assistant called 'm'oneypenny'. It is suppose to help you with online epayments. Studies have shown that people would rather have tech 'act' more like 'humans', however the question that follows is: Will the widespread 'humanization' of digital lead more to isolationism in the human world?

Juliana Loh's insight:

To the question "are we chasing cyborgs or are cyborgs chasing us?" It seems that our age has become a metaphoric cradle for the introduction of crypto-scientific projects.  Meet the world's first self-aware robot and precursor to a path that hopefully will not inspire other 'Terminator' type realities. The Film Society Honors Brian Clark (1968-2015) with a New Fund for Immersive Storytelling | "Chasing Cyborgs" -Digital Trends, Tools, Usability & Story-telling Secrets | Scoop.it
Contributions will establish a mentorship program in Brian’s name to provide guidance to emerging artists and creators in the field of participatory storytelling.
Juliana Loh's insight:

He has been called 'brilliant' by the industry that he helped nurture; 'a curious dash of mad scientist + visionary by his closest friends and a warm and generous 'mentor' by those of us who knew him well enough to spin close enough to his orbit'.

Brian Clark was a true leader and renaissance man who eloquently spoke not about engaging experiences for their own sake, but about experiences that held the potential of truly affecting and changing minds, hearts and visions. Brian was a 'rabble rouser' with a voice that could not be ignored; a true leader in the transmedia, film and digital communities.

Brian Clark, you will be missed.

Technology changes so fast and the way we respond to it makes us feel as though we're either one...
Juliana Loh's insight:

Opening up our world and finding ways to relate to people and groups that are very different from us will help us to understand the 'isms' and stereotypes that we ourselves have accepted consciously or otherwise. If we don't take time to 'shine the mirror' on ourselves and investigate where our thinking is misaligned, we are apt to bring those prejudices to the boardroom and ultimately to the campaigns and stories that we tell. Take time to dispel your own biases first!

What's trending recently has been the story about Cecil the Lion. I am no fan of Mr. Palmer, the idiot dentist who killed Cecil, however I do see how he may have become a scapegoat for every contentious issue that is volatile in the USA right now. 5 roles every great designer must play

5 roles every great designer must play | "Chasing Cyborgs" -Digital Trends, Tools, Usability & Story-telling Secrets | Scoop.it
Designers need to do more than just design. In-house designers are becoming more and more prevalent, and they can’t longer work in isolation. That means collaborating with departments a designer might not have worked with at an agency, such as marketing and business development.
Juliana Loh's insight:

As a consultant, I've often found designers working in full time roles to be completely isolated and silo'd in their decision to interact with the rest of the work crew. In my opinion, that is not a realistic way to be. Designers really must step out of their 'creativity' and be part entrepreneurs, teachers, facilitators and champions of the work they do. Without consistent mindful interaction and engagement with their stakeholders, designers run the risk of working from their egos and delivering work for themselves. It is a costly lesson to make.

Why VC Firms Are Snapping Up Designers

Irene Au, former head of Google's user interaction team, is the latest designer to make her way to a venture capital firm. Here's why VCs are so hot...
Juliana Loh's insight:

Recently, I've been spending time reading and attending presentations on future predictions especially wrt careers. Automation, the proliferation of computer-powered products as well as the mechanization of tertiary jobs in construction, agriculture and industrial work have in particular eradicated jobs and displaced people and their families. One field that seems to be defying this trend is the demand for good designers and storytellers. The former relies on employing empathy to develop tools, services and designs while the latter serves to enable people to both understand and describe the why's of what is being produced. Both careers require a deep understanding of human psychology and the ability for efforts to be measured and interpreted.

8 Classic storytelling techniques for engaging presentations | Sparkol

8 Classic storytelling techniques for engaging presentations | Sparkol | "Chasing Cyborgs" -Digital Trends, Tools, Usability & Story-telling Secrets | Scoop.it
A good public speaker takes their audience on a journey, leaving them feeling inspired and motivated. But structuring your speech to get your ideas across and keep your audience engaged all the way through is tricky. Try these eight storytelling techniques for a presentation that wows.
Juliana Loh's insight:

I am pretty sure I posted this 'classic' a while ago, but it's worth adding again. As one is asked to present their brands to various audiences, there are various factors at play:

Decide who you are speaking to, determine what their needs are and how you would like to approach them. *What is your intent?* to encourage curiosity? to expedite a quick sell? To be seen as 'trustworthy'? To communicate security?

Try storytelling your brand using these techniques.

Thank you Ffion Lindsay

Juliana Loh's insight:

What's happening in the world of 'transmedia'? Simon Staffans offers a glimpse through his blog describing what transmedia is and how it has evolved over the years. In its intrinsic form, 'transmedia' honors the strengths/limitations of different platforms to tell multi-faceted perspectives of a story. The question of 'is it viable' remains to be seen but one thing holds true: the principles involved in the design and development of 'transmedia' is here to stay and easily translates in a multi-platform world.
