Nanobots Could Perform Surgeries in The Future

Nanobots Could Perform Surgeries in The Future | "Chasing Cyborgs" -Digital Trends, Tools, Usability & Story-telling Secrets | Scoop.it
Researchers in Zurich are building nearly microscopic bots to help with delicate surgeries.
Juliana Loh's insight:

Nanobots could perform surgery in the future! It's an exciting field that certainly gives hope to alot of people yet there are so many implications to consider. What if something goes wrong? Who ethically is incharge? Will we need a new group of 'nano-lawyers' to harvest 'malfuntioned' case studies? Will medicare have enough money to pay for such treatments? Will our society further divide into priveleged/non-priveleged? And who 'teaches' the robots? Will school systems meld into versions of bio-technological medical domains? Lots of questions yet.... what if Nanobots could save your vision? your legs? your child? What if Nanobots was the ONLY thing that could save YOUR LIFE?

Escaping the Holodeck Storytelling and Convergence in VR and AR

What storytelling possibilities can AR technologies and techniques offer to VR developers right now? And how can we design experiences and immersiv
Juliana Loh's insight:
AR as a precursor to VR is recognizing a need to release control of their players. Game design is changing as people are negotiating that space between what they are able to do, what their limitations are within the game + and what they are able to 'get away with'. AR pushes the boundaries of imagination by providing space for the wearer to create and experience their own identity within the choices they make. What is challenged is their sense of identity and self-expression.

Why Apple Is Opening Up Its Software And Inviting Developers In

Why Apple Is Opening Up Its Software And Inviting Developers In | "Chasing Cyborgs" -Digital Trends, Tools, Usability & Story-telling Secrets | Scoop.it
At WWDC, Apple signaled that it's opening up: One by one, its services are inviting developers to play.
Juliana Loh's insight:
Apple is finally opening itself up to third party developers and banking on crowd-sourced innovation to bring added value and innovation to its products. What is most interesting is that the  impetus that drove this decision came not so much from the commanding voice of the company CEO as the wants and needs of Apple's little girl "Siri".

Everybody knows that "it takes a village to raise a child" and in order to keep up with the competition (Amazon's ECHO smart speaker - ALEXA + Google assistant devices) the brainiacs at Apple are hurriedly ushering their offspring out into the world where she will be able to learn and assimilate information.

"Siri needs to get smarter: She needs to hook into more services people use, learn new skills, and become as useful as possible."

As with all parents, the act of nurturing versus 'letting go' brings all sorts of anxiety to the forefront, but this is one decision alone that will be the one to launch Siri toward a brighter potential.

The platforms that will be offered for 'tinkering' will include:  iOS, Mac OS (formerly OS X), watchOS, and tvOS.

The impact of design is going to change the way we interact with objects and people around us. Who will be the leaders of tomorrow? Some say the artists of today... A New Dimension of Drawing

A New Dimension of Drawing | "Chasing Cyborgs" -Digital Trends, Tools, Usability & Story-telling Secrets | Scoop.it
Disney Legend Glen Keane demonstrates the power of VR by drawing his most-famous characters in 3D using an app called Tilt Brush.
Juliana Loh's insight:

I just *have* to talk about HTC Vive's powerful project Tilt Brush. It is a VR 'canvas' for artists which means that artists can literally don the gear and create masterpieces in pure space. When I first tried it, I created a horse using 4 brush strokes. Soon after this, I realized that I didn't have to 'draw' the figure but instead was able to 'sculpt' the object using 3d methods I had learned as a sculptor plus use layering techniques present in cake making. In a very short time, i was able to create a flower in the same way glass is blown. Glen Keane, one of my favourite artists was invited to play with the program. This article truly epitomizes the joy most creatives feel when they first try out VR.

Juliana Loh's insight:

I actually thought this was common sense.... never leave a screen empty. In terms of storytelling, if you assume the role of sidekick... the person responsible for helping your hero determine what to do next/where to do... this is something that might come naturally to you. You are the character that informs your user what is 'suppose' to happen or where that person is even though s/he might enter 'empty' rooms. In terms of ux, adding more info regarding screens helps make efficient the on-boarding process.

Apple known for its innovative stance did a 180 when it introduced flat design to its layouts. Why don't flat designs work? Above all, because it creates uncertainty in user interactions by reducing visual cues and signifiers.

Players in hunt for Pokemon Go monsters feel real-world pain | Toronto Star

Players in hunt for Pokemon Go monsters feel real-world pain | Toronto Star | "Chasing Cyborgs" -Digital Trends, Tools, Usability & Story-telling Secrets | Scoop.it
Popular Pokemon app, which uses augmented reality, has players running around in search for characters. A number of people have wiped out or bumped into things as they walk around with their eyes glued to their screens.
Juliana Loh's insight:
Whenever I wear VR gear, I'm always worried about who is around me and most especially if my wallet/keys are in a safe place. There is a different kind of usability factor that exists outside of the virtual environment that I feel most people have not considered carefully. As of yet, VR and AR (augmented reality) are working on bringing entertainment toward that 'sweet spot' that combines full immersion with physical world safety aspects.

We run toward goals specified by augmented reality challenges and then hit our heads on signs/trees etc. or fall off sidewalks etc. As our minds are habituated to our ability to manipulate assets, we stand the risk of transferring and projecting those behaviours onto real-world obstructions. Pokeman Go the game proves this very point as reported injuries soar during game play. I'm very excited about the prospect of playing more games like this however it's a matter of being more aware of one's exterior environment; a feat not too easy for the competitive at heart.

What Killed The Infographic?

What Killed The Infographic? | "Chasing Cyborgs" -Digital Trends, Tools, Usability & Story-telling Secrets | Scoop.it
If you've seen fewer experimental data visualizations lately, it's only because the medium has grown up and gotten a job.
Juliana Loh's insight:

From 2007-2012 infographics trended in companies feeling the pressure to drive traffic to their 'stories' using big data generated information. Visual Data Designers and Information Scientists were well paid and and in high demand until changes in technology changed the landscape. Why did this shift occur?

According to renowned data designer Jer Thorp  (my former instructor) several factors caused this turnaround:

1. ease of use wrt data software, accessibility of data visualization software and lowered cost made it easy for corporations to hire designers in house.

2. A move from desktop computers to mobile created a different expectation.
