Web Curation And New Professions: The Content Curator

Web Curation And New Professions: The Content Curator | SpisanieTO | Scoop.it

Excerpted from article on Mashable:
"Today, however, curation encompasses a whole new catalog of professions, brands and tools — and most revolve around the web.

A curator ingests, analyzes and contextualizes web content and information of a particular nature onto a platform or into a format we can understand. In other words, a curator is like that person at the beach with the metal detector, surfacing items and relics of perceived value. Only, a web curator shares those gems of content with their online audiences.

Some believe "curator" to be a reappropriated, throwaway term, one that simply elevates marginally focused web users.

Some media sites choose to curate articles already published and reported by other sites. For instance, Boing Boing and The Awl feed links that reference news reported by other sites around the web, tailoring content that will resonate with their readership.

More and more people are taking the reins into their own hands. Consumer curators are flocking to sites like The Fancy to browse products and silo them into categories. Other curation tools aren't as consumer-driven but nonetheless help users organize and structure web content that matters to them.

As much as the term gets criticized, curation requires patience, resourcefulness and a keen editing eye. It means becoming fluent in one particular dialect of the web, versus trying to speak its entire language. It's the reason journalists have beats, and the reason you chose one major in college, instead of seven.
Perhaps the best part? Curation is a never-ending job, and it never gets boring..."

A personal story on curation for educational purposes. Author’s highlights, a testimony of a meaningful curation:

Content curation is not merely selecting sources and aggregate them and even less in an automated style. If you don’t apply your voice, as a storyteller, there will be no engagement with your community.

Content curation implies that each curated resource will acquire a specific (new) meaning,  according to the context it is displayed.

Which service should a curator employ? The best service is not only the one that suits the curator’s narrative and technical skills but also the needs and the consumption information.

The Social Media Wars [INFOGRAPHIC]

The Social Media Wars [INFOGRAPHIC] | SpisanieTO | Scoop.it

Social media has become an essential part of our daily lives, but, with so many networks out there fighting for our attention which networks are we really using? Overall, 72% of adults over the age of 18 used a social network in 2012. Currently Facebook is still the most popular site with 62% of adult global Internet users actively logging in, with nearly half of these users active on Twitter too...

Siri Anderson's curator insight, January 26, 2014 2:20 PM

I find it interesting to note parallels and contrasts between use of social networks in f2f environments and online environments.  In some instances the online version works better for those who flounder in person. In some cases people who love the real world interactions disparage the online ones. But for most of us, there seems to be a parallel in our patterns and style it would seem. Where should children "learn" how to do this, or is that lesson beside the point at this time?

A previous report from Forrester Research established Search Engine Optimization (SEO) as the most important source of targeted traffic business owners can have for their websites, with organic web search or natural search sitting at the top of traffic sources. Digital marketers expect this trend to persist and would grow at a steady rate despite the proliferation and growing popularity of other traffic sources like social networks and other online or offline channels.

The following infographic describes some of the most anticipated SEO trends for the new year.

In the past 5 years social media growth has exploded around the globe and, as platforms such as Twitter and Facebook expand and begin to increasingly mirror and reflect “real life”, they take on many of the problems of the offline world, too.

For example: security. With millions of social media views, updates and registrations taking place literally each and every minute, the potential for identify thieves, hackers and good, old-fashioned burglars to exploit your personal information has never been greater.

Which means it’s solely your responsibility to ensure you’re protecting yourself when using these channels...

Asil, thank you so much for this very appropriate reminder.
blogbrevity's comment, August 5, 2013 9:20 AM
Great opportunity to explain the difference! Permamarks is a "hybrid" way to save links, and the basic version is free. Permamarks creates ONE link that is BOTH a bookmark and an archive at the point of time YOU viewed it: http://pmrks.com/cronut-for-saving-links. When you share a permamark, it provides content in the "context" of when you viewed it. That is what makes Permamarks so valuable for scooping. It preserves a link to a current "realtime" page, but if that page has been removed or changed, you automatically have an archived version at the point in time you captured it. Your scoop.it pages stay relevant and free of dead links. This is very different from other archiving or caching services you can go back to and research pages or links archived at "their" point in time (which may be different from "your" point in time.) Robin, this reminds me of when I first defined curation as different from aggregation because curation presented a "point of view." This is so important to curation. Now an individual can save the internet from their own "point of view." Thank you, again, for this great post and discussions.

BlairEvanBall's curator insight, February 25, 2014 4:38 PM

In the Social Media world...if you constantly Sell, Sell, Sell, the audience will run from you. For traditional marketers this is a big switch and continues to be a struggle for many.

The sales people who get it are outperforming their peers with social media being the driving factor for increased customers and sales.

You still have to sell, but the Vilfredo Pareto principal applies, only do it 20% of the time.

Chris Perkowski's curator insight, February 25, 2014 6:56 PM

Many people expect coupons and ads to be delivered to their doorsteps, so that they can visit stores and try products. They will then pursue or break  the relationship depending on the level of service they have received or the quality of those products.

Things are different online. Audiences will not purchase anything if the companies have not proven their worth beforehand. Audiences have the power. And they do not hesitate to make their voices heard whether they are happy or not. When it comes to social media content, 8 out of 10 of your shares should be valuable and relevant to your audience while the rest can be self-promotional.

I think the ideas in this article are extremely accurate. Social media marketing today is all about real time up-to-date information whether it's from a company, organization or a customer. Many people trust the reviews and shares of other customers rather than the proclamations of the company trying to sell you their products. This article accurately explains the Pareto Principle as it pertains to social media marketing.
