Why Putting Yourself in the Customer’s Shoes Doesn’t Work | Marketing Hub

Why Putting Yourself in the Customer’s Shoes Doesn’t Work | Marketing Hub | SpisanieTO | Scoop.it

HBR: What kind of customer preferences did you focus on?

In one experiment we asked managers to develop a new car model and choose the features customers wanted. In another we had them decide on a new ad campaign for Rolex. In a third they were asked to set the price for a sandwich at a café. In every case, predictions about what customers wanted matched the managers’ personal preferences more closely when the managers had been primed to be more empathetic.

They were projecting?

Yes, even when the customers were totally different from themselves. In the sandwich experiment, for instance, the customers were students. Completely different people, but the managers still projected their own preferences onto them....

Many of the content marketer positions (also occasionally called Blog Editor or even Content Engineer) are the first position of their kind within the company, showing a new trend in hiring someone to focus solely on content.

Lynn Pineda's curator insight, February 24, 2014 4:52 PM

As the article suggests, content marketing is huge for 2014.  Large and small companies are embracing it's importance. When you compete  for business in 2014, you're wise to have the creation of content on your checklist.

Content marketing isn't just for the Big Boys, it's also suits well to the individual business owner, like myself, as a South Florida Real Estate Agent.  If you choose not to sink, you'd better start swimming in the sea of content and start putting out content.

The Video Marketing Tsunami

The Video Marketing Tsunami | SpisanieTO | Scoop.it

Online video picked up speed in 2013 and will continue to gain significant momentum in 2014. A simple Google search taps into a pile of data that underscores the importance of video in marketing collateral.

-- >  73% of B2B marketers say they will focus on video as a content marketing solution in 2014. In an industry saturated with whitepapers and e-books, the rise of online videos has come as a relief for B2B marketers, providing them with a new and exciting platform to market their products and services.

Marty
Video's Unique Stone Skipping via Widgetization
Videos skip across the surface of the web thanks to easy SHARES via links and embed codes. Be sure to HOST some of your own videos since the only people you are making rich by using Vimeo or YouTube is THEM.

When you host your videos make sure you offer the same easy ratings (thumbs up or down), views feedback metrics and easy link or embed options made popular by YouTube and Vimeo.

This "stone skipping" nature of video makes it HIGHLY VIRAL. Video engagement can be HIGH too (if the video doesn't drive visitors away which many do). Keep your videos short and "Daisy Chain" them together  like TV episodes (hanging threads at the end with the promise of resolution in the next video on into infinity :). M

Why There Is A Curatti In Your Future - Curatti | SpisanieTO | Scoop.it

Great conversations with Guillaume Decugis, Mark Schaefer, Phil Buckley, Mark Traphagen & others last week convince me there's a Curatti in our future.

Curatti is an example of the HuffPost, BuzzFeed, Mashable multi-author, multi-thread held together by content curation model. I've noted to own the conversaton is to own the traffic. This model is best way to "own the converation" today and that is why there is a Curatti in your future.

SoundCloud Sounds Like MAGIC
I'm in my honeymoon period with my new iPad. You know that first week when you load 100 apps most of which you will never open or use. One new app I encourage people and e-commerce merchants to explore is SoundCloud.

SoundCloud is a sound sample of the world. The app's UI is easy to use and its catalog of User Generated Content (contributed sounds) is big and sure to get bigger.

WHY?

https://soundcloud.com/pwhitty/listening-to-the-wind-through

I just tweeted the sound of wind blowing in tall grass. A few birds squawk and sing, time passes. It sounds like grassy dunes next to a beach, but the beach and the waves are far enough wind and birds dominate.

Impossible to listen to pwhitty's magical 10 minute recording and feel anything other than more relaxed than when you started. Sounds are such a powerful artistic medium unused in contemporary e-commerce.

SoundCloud will fix that since its possible to curate sound in the same way we curate images or video. Sample, edit, tag and mix to tell a more complete story, set a mood or help illustrate our words and images.

What is the power of a few sample of pwwhitty's magical ten minutes of wind and birds moving tall grass? Think a 3x or 4x increase in conversion not to mention a whole new dimension to User Generated Content (UGC) for contests and games.

Ask your visitors what SEO sounds like or provide a prize for the best summer vacation sounds and let UGC do it's #SEO and content marketing magic.

Kudos SoundCloud for hearing what only you heard and for creating such an elegant and seductive tool.

It has become clear that social media is turning into quite the process. It’s becoming more and more important, so many different tools and advice columns keep popping up to help businesses and individuals stay organized and successful when it comes to this newer marketing effort. This has caused many companies to create a full-time social media position for experts to help manage the many social accounts, follow analytics, get creative with engagement, etc. It takes a lot of time and effort, but the payoff is only increasing as social involvement increase.

As Beyonce proved when she rethought her last album to be more visual the visual marketing revolution is here (Beyonce covered here http://sco.lt/7Pci1p). Here are 12 GREAT Visual Marketing Tips from Column 5 the Infographics experts:

1. Be Visual.
2. Show YOUR Personality.

3. Only share NEWSWORTHY news.

4. Let People See Your Engine (able to look behind the curtain).

5. Focus on and Feature Your POEPLE.

6. Make IT Easy To Share (and IT is everything).

7. Present DATA in context.

8. Don't forget the TANGENTIAL.
9. Share the LOVE.
10. Product Tie-Ins should happen NATURALLY and ORGANICALLY.

11. Share VALUES.

12. Pat yourself on the BACK every now and again.

My favorite is FEATURE YOUR PEOPLE. Clients ask me and/or complain they have no good content. Nonsense you have amazing content sitting at desks or on the shop floor.

Telling your product's story by proxy, by telling the stories of the people that work on it, is a brilliant way to create STICKY content that isn't self-serving and feels more TRUE.

Future Of Web Design In 3 Parts
What does the future of web design look like? So much is up in the air this Haiku Deck is my third and the topic is far from exhausted:

Future of Web Design 1: Web design in a SoLoMo world.

http://sco.lt/61eqNF ;

Future of Web Design 2: Web  design when THEY and US &  OUT THERE and IN HERE are the same.
http://sco.lt/7r6zkf ;

Future of Web Design 3: How does a semantic and mobile web change design, marketing and sales.

What happens when TIME becomes a perpetual now, sales happens in real time and marketing is about curation? Web design as we've known it is about to change as much as something can change.

Why? I scratched the surface of why in How Entropy Is Creating Web 3.0 Right Under Our Noses:

Bottom line is everything is changing FAST so rewards go to the quick and flexible. If you have the courage to throw out almost everything you believe about everything once again you may just WIN BIG.

6 case studies & infographics: the optimal time to send emails

6 case studies & infographics: the optimal time to send emails | SpisanieTO | Scoop.it

Email has the potential to deliver a strong ROI for marketers, though the precise response rates depend on a number of factors including the subject line, type of offers and the time of day the email is sent.

The best way of accurately finding the optimal time of day to send your emails is to run tests, taking into account fluctuations around pay day and annual events such as Christmas and bank holidays.

According to the Econsultancy/Adestra Email Marketing Industry Census 2013 only half of businesses (49%) are currently testing the time and day of their email messages, so either the other 51% already know the optimum time or they're working off a hunch.

So to give some food for thought on where to start looking and testing, here are six case studies and infographics that look at the best time and day of the week to send emails...
