The Niwano Peace Prize Goes to Sulak Sivaraksa

The Niwano Peace Prize Goes to Sulak Sivaraksa | Spiritual, Not Religious | Scoop.it

Rather little known in the United States, the Niwano laureates are an impressive group and the aspiration is that this prize be a spiritual equivalent to the Nobel Peace Prize."  [excerpt:] For Sulak, Buddhism is a questioning process: question everything, including oneself, look deeply, and then act from that insight. He is among a handful of leaders world-wide working to revive the socially engaged aspects of spirituality. Whatever he does, however he does it, at the core of his work is a mission to build a new leadership for change at all levels, within his country and beyond.

A Great Story (Think About This) : EnlightenNext: The Magazine for Evolutionaries

A Great Story (Think About This) : EnlightenNext: The Magazine for Evolutionaries | Spiritual, Not Religious | Scoop.it
If Homer was alive in the twenty-first century, he would not be telling stories about ships and seas, sirens and sailors. Surely, the great bard would represent our moment in history with a myth that captures the essence of our contemporary zeitgeist. What would such a myth look like? In their new book, Journey of the Universe, Brian Swimme and Mary Evelyn Tucker invite us into the scientific story of the Universe, imbuing it with all the passion and purpose of a great religious myth.

Aung San Suu Kyi: A triumph of the spirit | Spiritual, Not Religious | Scoop.it
"We have to work for change all the time," she says. "There may be times when we feel that what we have done has not really achieved great results, sometimes there may be regressions, but that doesn't matter. The world is not a static place, it shouldn't be static.
"We should be moving all the time, moving to bring about better change, instead of just sitting there and letting things happen the way other people who are not so desirous of good change wish them to happen." ~ Aung San Suu Kyi

Train Your Mind: Don’t expect applause. | Tricycle

Train Your Mind: Don’t expect applause. | Tricycle | Spiritual, Not Religious | Scoop.it
It is surprising how quickly our expectations trigger emotions such as anger, jealousy, righteous indignation, and self-pity. Instead of being able to appreciate what comes our way, we fester about how we didn’t get the praise or recognition we rightfully deserved. And if what we are doing is all about being seen, when we are not seen, the wind goes out of our sails and we founder.

Another problem with the hunt for approval is that it to gain approval you must buy in to the dominant values of the society around you. If what gets approval is getting rich, that is what you strive for; if it is beauty, that is what you obsess about; if it is power over others, that is what you focus on. The desperation for outer rewards goes hand-in-hand with an increasing sense of inner poverty.
