I got 99 problems... palsy is just one | Specific Learning Disabilities | Scoop.it
"I have cerebral palsy. I shake all the time," Maysoon Zayid announces at the beginning of this exhilarating, hilarious talk. (Really, it's hilarious.) "I'm like Shakira meets Muhammad Ali." With grace and wit, the Arab-American comedian takes us on a whistle-stop tour of her adventures as an actress, stand-up comic, philanthropist and advocate for the disabled.
susan koceski's insight:

A great inspiration and message of all the abilities that are sometimes overlooked for people with disabilities.  I love the message to make people with disabilities more prominent in our mainstream culture through media.  I believe that would breed more tolerance and understanding.

5 Fantastic, Fast, Formative Assessment Tools

5 Fantastic, Fast, Formative Assessment Tools | Specific Learning Disabilities | Scoop.it
With tools like Socrative, Kahoot, Zaption, Chatzy, and Plickers, teachers can use tech for immediate feedback about how students are learning and understanding the lesson.
susan koceski's insight:

Some of these tools might be very helpful.  I think the use of these tools emphasizes how formative assessment is intentional and embedded to your instruction.  If more teachers were routinely using formative assessment, would we close the achievement gap?  Would we leave less children behind?

Moments like this are why we need awareness.

I saw this yesterday and thought it was worth reading to put a little perspectives in our day.  Since we work with kids who have differences, it is sometimes shocking to me about the insensitivity of others.  We do good work.  Feel good that you are trying to change the perspectives.

susan koceski's insight:

Good tips for parents.  I think it is so important for parents to understand that their role is primarily practicing and enjoyment of reading not teaching reading.  It should feel like a conversation, with opportunities to ask questions. If your child is barking at the print, it is too hard.  They should be reading books at home that they know 98-100% of the words.  This blog has good questions for parents to ask while their son or daughter is reading a longer text.

A unique tool to spot dyslexia in children

A unique tool to spot dyslexia in children #edchat http://t.co/06poOyAXwJ
susan koceski's insight:

We have long known from functional magnetic imaging that students who have reading disabilities or dyslexia have noticeable differences in the way the brain processes langauge (parietotemporal region of the brain: slow, analytic decoding function and the occipitotemporal: rapid, automatic word identification).  Most of these studies are down with kids already identified.  What is interesting about this line of research is that it followed students over time.

Brilliant article about allowing kids to interact as kids, not as "other".

"Here’s the thing: kids categorize. They need your help — and maybe mine — to make sure Sarah gets into the right category. They ask questions to figure out how things fit in their world. When you don’t let them ask their “rude” questions, you confirm my daughter as “other.” Believe it or not, every kid I’ve met who was allowed to ask as many “rude” questions as they liked, learned in just minutes to see my daughter as I see her. She is just a kid."

Disabled students aren't as disabled as you think [Commentary]

Disabled students aren't as disabled as you think [Commentary] | Specific Learning Disabilities | Scoop.it
This summer, Arne Duncan , the U.S. secretary of education, startled public school systems nationwide by shifting the focus of enforcement of federal laws covering students with disabilities from technical compliance like timelines to accountability for academic outcomes. The shift has seismic impact, plunging the number of states who fully meet federal requirements from 41 to 18. Maryland, despite laudable efforts, is one of the fallen states.
susan koceski's insight:

We have the wrong delivery system in public schools.  Students get more specialize instruction and time as they get older instead of intense services early when any gaps are smaller.  The dosing is all wrong.  Combine the delivery system problems with low expectations.  The poor delivery model of specialized instruction in schools directly impacts the lact of progress and the low expectations that teachers have learned to expect.
