Inclusion has both social and academic benefits for students with disabilities, according to special-education expert Thomas Hehir, an author and professor at Harvard University. Speaking Monday to a group of educators at Fitchburg State University in Massachusetts, Hehir presented common traits found in three Boston-area schools where inclusion has been seen as successful. Teachers at the schools are resourceful, are given time for collaboration and problem-solving, and design their classrooms to meet the unique needs of their particular students, he said.
