The Bid Coach's insight:

Being spontaneous takes practice!
Mark Twain said it took him about 3 weeks to write a decent impromptu speech. He was acknowledged as one of the best speakers of his day so for him to say that must have some credibility. Shame more people don't believe it and actually set aside the necessary time to prepare thoroughly!

As a speaker, it is our job to make an audience feel comfortable with us. When they are, it leaves them free to concentrate on our message, which ironically may be an uncomfortable one. When an audience is uncomfortable, it means we have drawn their attention to something other than our key messages and they are off on a journey of self discovery. The audience is now consciously looking for evidence to confirm why it is uncomfortable and you have lost the opportunity to hit home your message.
