The Benefits of Raising Bilingual Children - Playful Learning

The Benefits of Raising Bilingual Children - Playful Learning | Bilingual Children | Scoop.it

Nuria from the The Adventures Archive is here today to share some helpful tips on raising bilingual children… By now you’ve probably heard a lot about the benefits of bilingual education. From enhancing your kids cognitive capacity, to a better developed linguistic understanding, there are so many reasons why you should introduce more than one language in your home. Today I wanted to focus on a less known advantage, mental flexibility.

Sonja Hartemink e-learning Spanish's insight:

Kids don’t do grey. Their world is all black or white, things are “grrrreat” or “oooful”, they love something “so very much” or they “hate it forever”. And most of the times if you give them a task they’ll want to do it just one particular way.

Yet teaching kids mental flexibility is crucial. A child who is not mentally flexible has trouble adapting to unexpected changes in routine, finds it hard to self-evaluate and is less willing to embrace other people’s opinions. They can grow up to become rigid adults that lack the elasticity that is needed to find different solutions or to work inside a team.

We help your child learn Spanish in a proficient, professional, easy and fun way. Interactive learning materials and one-on-one online evaluations with qualified Spanish native teacher in Spain.

Why Raising a Bilingual Child Is Very, Very Simple—and Very, Very Difficult - Bilingual Monkeys

Why Raising a Bilingual Child Is Very, Very Simple—and Very, Very Difficult - Bilingual Monkeys | Bilingual Children | Scoop.it

Note: This post originally appeared at Multilingual Living, a recommended resource for parents raising bilingual children. Also see the Inspiring Interview with Corey Heller of Multilingual Living, here at Bilingual Monkeys. It’s a personal and in-depth look at Corey’s own bilingual journey.

On one hand, raising a bilingual child is very, very simple: given sufficient exposure to two languages, and a genuine need to use both, the growing child will become bilingual quite naturally.

===============================================

To help you teach your child Spanish in a proficient and fun way, guided by qualified Spanish native teachers in Spain, find out more about our Spanish programs for kids, and our virtual educational platform.

www.spanish-school-herradura.com

Sonja Hartemink e-learning Spanish's insight:

Corey Heller: "In my work as a longtime teacher of bilingual children, having watched hundreds of children become proficient in two languages at Hiroshima International School, I can say that the process itself is straightforward. When these key requirements of exposure and need are met, nature will work its magic and do the rest. The result is the desired outcome: active bilingual ability.

This process may be simple, but it’s hardly easy, particularly when the child attends a majority language school, like my own two kids. In such circumstances, the simplicity of the challenge can become very difficult indeed."

Single parent? Want to raise a bilingual child?

Single parent? Want to raise a bilingual child? | Bilingual Children | Scoop.it
Most advice for parents raising bilingual children is based on the presumption that there are two parents actively involved in the upbringing. What if you are a single parent and don’t have the support of a partner – can it still be done? This is a question that has been put to me quite a few times, so hence today’s post.

Sonja Hartemink e-learning Spanish's curator insight, April 4, 7:58 PM

. know some experts discourage single parents from attempting to raise bilingual children, as it is not an easy task. Things to take into consideration are: Will you be the person passing on the minority language? If yes, how much time will you be able to spend with your child? Will sticking to the chosen language cause extra pressure for you? I am stating the obvious here, but being a single parent is not an easy thing to do at the best of times, so you need to be realistic about what you can take on. There are a lot of benefits in becoming bilingual for your child, but a highly stressed-out parent due to additional pressure from chosen common language is a very high price to pay for it. However, if you feel passionate about it and, after taking the above into account, think it is doable, I also believe that you can do it and commend you for it. It will take a fair amount of determined commitment, a lot of your time, some help from others and maybe a bit of money, depending on the circumstances.

In other words, not only will the kids be entertained, but they will also be immersed in Spanish or the target language you’re trying to teach them.

The course consists of 3 main parts and will start off with 5 theoretical classes in order to understand the basic principles of scuba diving. The real diving classes will take place in both confined and open water. The diving exercises in confined water will help to develop an understanding of the basic principles of scuba diving.

You will learn things like how pressure affects your body, how to choose the best scuba diving gear and how to set it up, what to consider when planning dives and you will also practice some emergency skills, like sharing air or replacing your scuba diving mask. During the course, you will also dive in open water where you will attain the skills you need to dive in open water and where you will fully experience the underwater adventure with your instructor at one of the beautiful dive sites along the Costa Tropical.

Sonja Hartemink e-learning Spanish's insight:

This is a new blog, dedicated to our Spanish Language School in the South of Spain. It is located right on the beach, of a beautiful local town in the South of Spain; La Herradura. Perfectly located near beautiful cities like Granada, Frigiliana, Almuñecar, Sevilla and Malaga.

The school is small and familiar and ideal for families (we teach children from 5 years) and people looking to stay in a typical Spanish town. It is also a great place for hiking, horseback riding and water sports (sailing, surfing, kayaking). Because of the good climate you can practise these sports all year around!

The town is surrounded by 3 beautiful mountain chains; the Axarquía, Alpujarras and the Sierra Nevada. In the winter you can lay on the beach during the daytime, and go skiing in less than 1.5 hours drive. A unique, unspoilt part of Spain, safe, and far away from mass tourism.

7 things you should not say to a bilingual child

7 things you should not say to a bilingual child | Bilingual Children | Scoop.it

be it their bodies, looks, family, friends, hobbies, the list is endless. Languages are no exception, so adults should be mindful when making comments or even asking questions to do with their languages.

We help teach your child Spanish. Our programs are available online, through virtual platform developed with interactive learning materials. The progress is closely monitored by qualified Spanish native teachers in Spain. More information www.spanish-school-herradura.com

Sonja Hartemink e-learning Spanish's insight:

1. “Where do you come from?”

This may sound like an innocent, everyday question you could ask anyone, but for bilingual (and/or bi-cultural) children the question can be hurtful and possibly hard to answer. Because, what you are actually saying is “You are not from here, are you?”, and the underlying statement is that the child is a foreigner in the country.

2. “Say something in [insert language]”

Never ask bilingual children to say something in a language just to prove they can. Language is about communication, not about showing off.

3. “You have hardly any accent when you speak [insert language]”

Prestigious Bilingualism – Are all bilingual children created equal? | RaisingYourBilingualChildren.com | Bilingual Children | Scoop.it

If you are reading this post then you are probably fully aware of the benefits of childhood bilingualism.  Being able to communicate in more than one language not only opens up new worlds to children, but also helps them to navigate their monolingual settings with added dexterity.

But are all bilingual children created equal?

Sonja Hartemink e-learning Spanish's insight:

Sonja Hartemink e-learning Spanish's insight:

Whilst studying for my Masters, I came across the notion of ‘Prestigious Bilingualism.’  Typically a prestigious bilingual is one who owns two high status languages.  It is thought that children who speak French and English or Japanese and German fluently will tend to be prestigious bilinguals.

The concept of linguistic prestige is often paralleled by social, cultural and economic prestige.  In other words languages are ranked according to the perceived socio-economic status of native speakers.

The Bilingual Mind - Life as a Bilingual

The Bilingual Mind - Life as a Bilingual | Bilingual Children | Scoop.it

What do you mean by the expression "the bilingual mind"?

multilingualism matters for our understanding of human cognition.

The process of learning and using language affects categorization, memory, perception, and self-perception; learning another language may reshape these processes and reorganize the structure of the mind.

Learn and improve Spanish Online, guided by Spanish native teacher in Spain: www.spanish-school-herradura.com

Sonja Hartemink e-learning Spanish's insight:

Temple University professor, Aneta Pavlenko, has just written a ground-breaking book, The Bilingual Mind, on the intriguing relationship between language and thought in bi- and multilinguals. She is herself a speaker of many languages and has researched this topic for much of her career. She has very kindly accepted to answer a few questions about her book.

Your work is inspired by the writings of some renowned linguists and anthropologists such as Humboldt, Boas, Sapir and Whorf. What role did they play exactly?

These scholars are commonly seen as proponents of linguistic relativity, the idea that different languages shape different worlds for their speakers. This idea is highly controversial and yet at the heart of the debate is a profound misunderstanding–and a deliberate misrepresentation–of Sapir’s and Whorf’s actual views. When we go back to their writings, we see that these multilingual scholars, interested in language change, did not believe for a moment that language determines thought. If it did, both language change and successful second language learning would have been impossible. In the book, I attempt to solve this linguistic whodunit, identify the real authors of the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis and then return to the original questions raised by Humboldt, Sapir, and Whorf about what happens when we learn a new language.

Carolina Studies Spanish at the #Spanish School of La Herradura, Spain : My teacher, Amelia | Bilingual Children | Scoop.it

Amelia  teacher at the #Spanish language school in #LaHerradura #Spain

Amelia
During my time here I have been taking  2 hour private lessons three times a week with Amelia.  In 2006 she obtained a 5 year degree from the University of Granada in "Semitic Studies" which is the study of languages such as Arabic, Hebrew, Israelean, Jordan.  This included one year of study abroad in Paris at the INALCO - Institute Nacional de Langues et civiltatious Orientales, which is a university for the study of languages of the Middle East.  In 20012 she obtained a Masters degree in "universitario espanol como lengua extranjero" from the University of Pablo de Olavide in Sevilla.  Essentially, what this means is that she specializes in teaching Spanish as a foreign language.

Sonja Hartemink e-learning Spanish's insight:

Her education, professionalism and experience is evident in her teaching style.  Her presence is exceedingly warm and nurturing which allows the learner to take the risks and gain the confidence needed to speak a foreign language.  She makes good eye contact and her brown eyes literally sparkle.  There is a light in her eyes that I don't think I've ever seen before.  She rides her bike to work at the school and as I sometimes sit and work here at the school on my laptop as I am now, one can overhear her singing in her classroom when she is not teaching.

She speaks very slowly and clearly.  She tells me that this is not an affect for teaching but in fact her normal mode of speaking.  She sounds natural in speaking therefore and one does not then feel like an imbecile being spoken to in this way.  She also has a rich and sonorous laugh and is easily amused it seems as she smiles and laughs freely throughout my lessons.  I have also noted that sometimes she touches her heart to communicate sincerity in delivering a compliment.  She may also add a bow to a compliment to deepen it's meaning.  I'm going to miss these private lessons with Amelia. I have learned so much from her as my teacher here at the Spanish School of La Herradura.
