There is a disturbing parallel between the destruction of art in Spain and the attack by Islamic fundamentalists on other religious art, icons, and relics. Just one of the ambiguities that makes the SCW so hard to parse in terms of modern values.

Looking back at the Spanish Civil War, 75 years on

Looking back at the Spanish Civil War, 75 years on | Spanish CIvil War Revisited | Scoop.it
A three-year war raged, the Second Spanish Republic was crushed and documentary photojournalism brought the reality of that to the world.

Via Gérard Soufflet, Jeff Beddow
Jeff Beddow's insight:

The Spanish Civil War was the first seemingly transparent war.  In fact, however, the burgeoning media presence at all points in the reality of war created a hallucinatory, distorting overlay.  No one could see the war through the eyes of a soldier, a soldier's parent, a commanding officer, a veteran, or even a politician or general who made the life and death decisions. All views were refracted through the heroic or brutal realism of the camera.  There was no room for complex assessment of risk and honor, reward and shame.  There was only the black and white polarization of projected images: the expressions of the victims, the assurance of the Generals, the vain gestures of the dead.

While I have posted info on the Spanish Civil War for over a year now, I don't take a moral or political position on it.  It is something that needs to be seen on its own terms, and seen clearly, and deeply, for the lesson that might teach us.  You are the student and the teacher in the course of war.  See what you can do with it.

Jeff Beddow's comment, May 4, 2013 10:52 PM
Thanks for the link, Rob. Franco was the second choice to lead the military uprising. The first General died in the crash of an overloaded plane taking him to his command.
Rob Innis's comment, May 5, 2013 10:01 AM
Overloaded with his military uniforms if I recall. So killed by his own vanity and foolish choice of plane. Or was it sabotage?
