Asian shares wither as OPEC's restraint hits oil

Asian shares wither as OPEC's restraint hits oil | Space versus Oil | Scoop.it

U.S. markets were closed on Thursday for the Thanksgiving holiday, leaving the spotlight on the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries' meeting in Vienna where Saudi Arabia blocked calls from poorer cartel members to cut production to stem a slide in global prices. ...

Japan Is Dying And We Still Don't Get It?! - The Automatic Earth | Space versus Oil | Scoop.it
That is, it’s the same as in Japan. And doing the same can only lead to the same results. A poorer population, a richer toplayer and an economy that continues to shrink, which will and must lead to the same deflationary trend. The idea that an economy can be rescued by pushing public funds into its finance system and stock markets has been forever thrown out by Japan’s experiences.

America’s energy landscape has undergone a dramatic shift over the last decade—literally and figuratively—as a result of the widespread use of horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing (“fracking”). Communicating the concept of BI to the uninitiated. • /r/BasicIncome

Communicating the concept of BI to the uninitiated. • /r/BasicIncome | Space versus Oil | Scoop.it
The most common reaction I get when discussing BI is that giving money away is somehow just wrong. There's no such thing as a free lunch. Someones got to pay in the end! I say look back a few thousand years. A hunter-gatherer was able to freely consume the products of the environment without contributing anything in return. Free water, food, fuel, shelter, and free access to the land that supports all this. They were basically free-loaders lazily wandering the aisles of nature's supermarket! Of course, life was not that easy, but studies show that 15-20 hours of hunting-gathering work per week could sustain a person. In fact every creature that has ever lived apart from modern urban-dwelling humans has been able to freely consume the products of the environment without contributing anything in return!! Because life is not a zero-sum game. Natures engines do most of our work, and we are the benefactors. But imagine dropping a hunter-gatherer into a modern urban environment. Every natural act of basic survival would be considered a criminal offence. To my way of thinking a BI puts a value on what should be our birthright as a denizen of the Earth. Not from some idealistic "human rights" point of view, but as a valuation of what nature actually provides for us for free. How we "pay" for a BI is a difficult question, we are after all trapped in a zero sum economic system, trapped in a mindset of balancing the books. I will leave that one for another rant.
