Our rapidly changing universe has been perfecting itself for more than 13 billion years, and the proof is just above your head.

Sure, you learned about the Big Dipper as a kid, but can you name the other constellations or point out visible planets on a crystal-clear evening? We found eight astronomy apps that not only map out the stars, but also let you explore beyond our solar system and uncover facts you never knew about space.

It's shaping up to be a big night for Alfonso Curaon's Gravity. The science fiction epic took home seven Academy Awards, including best director and best visual effects (not entirely surprising)....
Clinton Clark's insight:

It seems there is still a place for Space in popular culture...congratulations to Gravity for its successes at the box office, at the Oscars, and in raising awareness to the issues of space debris.

A Need To Remove Space Junk Now!!

A Need To Remove Space Junk Now!! | Space Situational Awareness | Scoop.it
Space within 2,000 kilometres of the Earth's surface is dangerously littered with junk and needs to be cleaned up. In February 2009. a derelict Russian satellite, Cosmos 2251, collided with the US satellite Iridium 33 800 kilometres over ...
Clinton Clark's insight:

Another commentary on the need to address space debris.  There is not much new content here, but there is a great picture of an astronaut performing an extra-vehicular maneuver from an automated side-loader garbage truck.  I promise, I did not create the image!

What We Now Know About The Chelyabinsk Meteor

What We Now Know About The Chelyabinsk Meteor | Space Situational Awareness | Scoop.it
A set of newly released papers reconstruct the fireball's impact.
Clinton Clark's insight:

This short article about the Chelyabinsk Meteor is a great primer for understanding the potential dangers of near-Earth asteroids and meteors.  Key pieces of info from the article:  this 62-foot meteor's airburst explosion was equivalent to 500,000-600,000 tons of TNT, and the researchers estimate our risk of impact from these types of objects might be 10 times greater than previously thought.

How To Prevent A 'Gravity'-Like Space Disaster

How To Prevent A 'Gravity'-Like Space Disaster | Space Situational Awareness | Scoop.it
Space debris could block access to earth orbit and stop our spy, weather, navigation and communication satellites from working. What we need is a space tug to clear up the mess and one company thinks it has the inside track.
Clinton Clark's insight:

Nice mainstream article on the risks of space debris and the Kessler effect.  Thanks againg to "Gravity" for bringing additional focus to this issue.  The end of the article discusses one of many potential alternatives to helping reduce this threat.  My opinion, the first thing we need is much better monitoring and tracking!

The economics of space junk - The Boston Globe

The economics of space junk - The Boston Globe | Space Situational Awareness | Scoop.it
The space thriller “Gravity” may have just ruined the popular image of space as a breathtaking abyss.
Clinton Clark's insight:

Love this quote:  Space, in other words, is a classic “tragedy of the commons” problem, in which many individuals benefit from a collective resource but no one has an incentive to bear the cost of maintaining it. Eventually, everyone suffers. But in space, there’s also a twist. Unlike most pollution, space junk is self-perpetuating. More debris increases the likelihood that a satellite will be disabled, prompting the launch of a new satellite to replace it—creating more debris, and spiraling from there.
