Orbital Space Solar power plants could become reality in 3 decades to meet global energy needs | Space matters | Scoop.it
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The sun's abundant energy, if harvested in space, could provide a cost-effective way to meet global power needs in as little as 30 years with seed money from governments, according to a study by an international scientific group.

Des humains sur la Lune dès 2019 ?

Des humains sur la Lune dès 2019 ? | Space matters | Scoop.it

Space capsule tests aim to ensure safe landings (Video) | Space matters | Scoop.it

In the Mojave Desert in southeast California, Boeing and teammate Bigelow Aerospace recently conducted a series of successful air bag drop tests for the Crew Space Transportation (CST)-100 mock capsule, which, like airbag tests done in cars, will help ensure that the seven crew members inside the capsule land safely after reentering the Earth’s atmosphere. Boeing is one of four companies competing to develop a commercial crew transportation system that will restore the United States' capability to provide access to the International Space Station by 2016.

SpaceX, NASA schedule next Dragon flight for early 2012

SpaceX, NASA schedule next Dragon flight for early 2012 | Space matters | Scoop.it

The first SpaceX demonstration flight to the International Space Station will launch no sooner than January as NASA awaits final delivery of flight software before clearing the mission to proceed, according to space agency sources.

A NASA manifest document shows the launch set for Jan. 12. SpaceX has a date on the Air Force-run Eastern Range for liftoff Jan. 7, at the earliest.

But an agency official familiar with the mission described the date as challenging and said February is a more likely timeframe for the flight.

Derniers espoirs pour la sonde Phobos-grunt {sciences²}

NASA's Europa Update --A Potential Ocean Habitat of Life

NASA's Europa Update --A Potential Ocean Habitat of Life | Space matters | Scoop.it
NASA will host a Science Update at 10 a.m. PST (1 p.m. EST) on Wednesday, Nov. 16, to discuss new theories concerning Jupiter's ice-bound ocean-moon Europa. The deepest ocean on Earth is the Pacific Ocean's Marianas Trench, which although it reaches a depth of 6.8 miles is awesomely trumped by the depth of the ocean on Europa, which some measurements put at 62 miles! The event will be held at NASA Headquarters in Washington.

'Space Tourists' Documentary Shows Reality of Space Fantasy

'Space Tourists' Documentary Shows Reality of Space Fantasy | Space matters | Scoop.it

What is the price that we pay to go to space?

Filmmaker Christian Frei explores this question in his documentary "Space Tourists," which deftly weaves together stories from 245 miles (394 kilometers) above Earth on the International Space Station, where one woman lives out her dream of flying in space, to inside the walls of the legendary Baikonour Cosmodrome, the launch site for the Russian space agency since the late 1950s, to the parched and desolate steppes of Kazakhstan in Central Asia, where unsuspecting lives are also touched by space travel.

Can you buy land on the Moon? | Space matters | Scoop.it
For now at least, the moon is like the sea: everyone can use it, but no one can own it. In 1967 the U.S. and the Soviet Union negotiated the Outer Space Treaty, which states that no nation can own a piece of the moon or an asteroid.
