HOUSTON -- With the space shuttle now history, NASA's next great mission is so audacious, the agency's best minds are wrestling with how to pull it off: Send astronauts to an asteroid in less than 15 years.
In a presentation at the International Space Development Conference (ISDC) in Huntsville, Alabama, Mars Society president Robert Zubrin unveiled a concept he calls the “Transorbital Railroad” to provide low-cost and regular access to space. The name, he explained in an interview at ISDC the day before his presentation, is intended to draw a parallel with the development of the transcontinental railroad in the United States in the 1860s. “How do we create something to open the way to space in as profound a way as the transcontinental railroad?”
One of the great debates among future space historians will be over why NASA continued to fly the Space Shuttles long after it become obvious that the system was a deadweight that held back the agency from reaching its purported goals in space. The stupendous expense of the Shuttles reduced the number of human spaceflight missions and severely constrained development of cost-effective launch systems and in-space technologies. The low flight rate of the fragile Shuttles slowed and drove up the cost of the few human spaceflight missions the agency did have, especially the ISS.
Washington (AFP) July 22, 2011 - NASA on Friday announced which crater it has picked for the 2.5 billion dollar Mars rover, Curiosity, to probe for signs of life when the unmanned vehicle is lowered onto the red planet next year.
"To search for life on Mars, future astronauts would naturally want to step outside their living habitat for a walk." So scientists are working to avoid contamination in the search for life on Red Planet
"Don't expect to hear any nostalgia about the soon-to-end space shuttle era from Elon Musk, the millionaire founder of Space Exploration Technologies. Musk isn't prone to look to the past, but rather to the future — to a "new era of spaceflight" that eventually leads to Mars."
